I understand the laughs and fingers pointing at crossfit as a joke.
I mean just look at all of the videos of noobs on youtube doing it!
What crossfit did was take functional workouts, with endurance (running/rowing)
and mixed it with strength (oly/power lifting). It was a way to get people
that don't workout into working out. So experienced guys like us look at it
like oh haha that's dumb, I already have my workouts down and I'm jacked as shit.
But the truth is...most "jacked" guys/girls are really not that athletic, meaning
they can't do much more than lift weights or jog on a treadmill. That's fine
if they are not into athletics, but a lot of us are.
The workouts are really not that much different than what NFL players have
been doing for decades (circuits with strength). Throw in a bunch of cardio/sprints/sled pulls
and you have yourself a damn conditioned athlete.
The whole deal with "crossfitters don't use proper form" is a misnomer.
Some do lack form and a lot are just learning these lifts. But then you take
experienced bodybuilders/powerlifters and throw them in and they have it nailed.
Guess what happens? These guys are the best because once they pick up the
endurance, they tear through these workouts. It's not easy though. You're
dead when you're done, more so than other workout I've ever done.
The coach at the crossfit gym I've been going to 2x/week has a BS in Exercise Science
and Nutrition. He's not just a certified crossfit guy. He looks like a bodybuilder but his endurance/strength
is through the roof. 5"10, 190" lbs. (life natty). He focuses on form first and foremost.
If you're just going through the motions and your form is shit, he makes you drop weight
until you can do it correctly. Not every gym is the same and each one is dependent on
the coach.
I don't think crossfit is the answer to working out and there are a lot of noobs
that give it a bad name. Throwing it into my power/bodybuilding routine
is one of the best things I've done. I'm extremely competitive and would
rather compete in that than pose on a stage. Everyone has different
goals and desires though.
