Squats hurt my back but leg presses hurt even worse. I do split squats with dumbbells now and don't worry about my back. My legs shake with very little weights and that is good enough for me.

never even considered this LL... I like squats but my lower back doesnt... hack squats on the sled do not hurt it as bad so i do them... dont like them but they serve the purpose...
My body weight is high(too high) so it doesn't take big dumbbells. That and I go all the way down, back up 1/3 hold for 3 seconds, down all the way, back up 2/3 hold for 3 seconds, down all the way, and back up. It burns like Hell.
