Would you rather be able to:

Squat 300 lbs for 10 reps

OR

Leg Press 1025 lbs for 10 reps?

My training partner and I have had this debate for a few weeks....

What do you think?

On a personal level I would go for the leg press because I have both spine and knee injuries (not 100% sure about the first though). The truth of the matter is that I prefer smith machine squats over anything.

300 for 10 reps isn't a feat for me, but I get the point. I'd much rather squat

Agree, the squat is a much better movement for overall leg development, if you have no pre-existing conditions with back or hips. Better range of motion, and more complete leg development, the KING of lower body exercises. The leg press, even though it allows the use of heavier weight, has a shorter range of motion, and can actually CAUSE spinal or hip injuries due to the pressure from the seat, and the temptation to use excessive weight.

I am more proud of my squat total than my leg press. Though I do enjoy doing the leg press more.

The weights you have quoted don't compare , someone who can perform a full range leg press on a cybex or other decent 45 leg press with in excess of one thousand pounds should be doing that squat as a warm-up . That being said you can't compare a squat to a leg press the squat is infinitely superior .

I prefer the squats myself. I am just coming off a back surgery and am wondering if I should stick with leg presses from now on? I never experienced pain while squating but am curious if the load from squats will risk further damage versus a seated leg press?

i'm never impressed with leg press because most only barely hit 90 degrees and don't go deep on them...90deg is a half movement in my opinion...impress me with hips below parallel on squats

Leg press is not comparable to squatting at all. Squats all the way.
