Family bench press day with lots of form work and experimentation.

Bench Press:
Vinny: 45x10, 50x8, 55x6, 60x3 60x2, 50x15
Bobby: 55x10, 60x8, 65x6, 70x4, 75x2, 95x5 (assisted partials), 55x15
Dad: 135x10, 185x5, 225x5, 255x5, 275x1, 265x3x3, 230x10
Gramps: 45x20, 95x10, 135x8, 185x6, 205x4, 225x1, 215x3x2, 195x10 ss with
Pullup (neutral grip): 12,12,12,12,12,12

Curl: 65x12x5 ss with
Lying Tri Ext / JM Press Hybrid: 75x10, 85x10, 65x15,10,8
Banded Tri Pushdown: Red mini x 100
Pull-Apart: Red mini x 50
Full Body Crunch: 70
Walk: 3 miles

Bodyweight: 167.1

* Little Vinny hadn't lifted in three weeks, so he lost a little ground. Should be back to where he was next week.
* Bobby did well. His biggest problem is confidence, ergo the assisted partials with 95, which is 15 lbs higher than his PR single. Afterwards, he added five reps to his amap set and still had more in him.
* Big Vinny was, as always, strong on his work sets. The triples with 265 were solid, but I'd like to see them move faster; so we'll probably stay with this weight until he can get 3x3 to move nicely.
* I lifted lighter, so I could concentrate on engaging my lats on the descent to spring load the press. Unfortunately, I was not feeling it. However, an epiphany occurred while my son and I were messing around with lying tri extensions and JM presses. I told him I was shooting for something in between...with upper arms less than vertical but not much greater than 45 degrees. In the process, we tried a hard elbow tuck while "pulling the bar apart". Lo and behold, our lats magically spread (DUH)!!! Did a few light BPs afterwards to make sure it worked the same. Will probably have to continue to play with lightish weights for a few weeks to nail the technique down, but if it gets me even five more pounds on the lift, it will have been worth it. Much thanks to Go Away and ChrisLindsay for the great info and videos they posted on their logs this past week, without which I'd never have figured these things out.

Been reading through your journal, and I'm liking it! Nice to see your family following in your footsteps. Also, your wife seems quite an interesting person. XD
Thanks, Joe. Judy is Sicilian and a lot more scary than she is interesting.

Thanks, big guy. As I told 5.0, I love the way everyone supports and encourages each other here.

Nice work. Finishing off a deload and working with a family, must have been a high energy session for you.

And yeah, I love those epiphanies. I sometimes discover an analogy for something that helps me (and sometimes other people) that help, or sometimes something clicks that I may have heard or read before, but never fully penetrated my brain.

Feeling that lat spread is something I can do really well on volume days, but have a hard time on my heavy days. I think it's because I'm concerned with just keeping them tight as I take a handoff. If I self-lift off, it seems like I get a better feel for it. Please continue to give observations and whatnot ... those are helpful.

I will, Chris. Between you, me, and Go Away, we'll figure it out. Thanks for the support. (We lightweights have to stick together.)

Back to normal level of insanity. Pretty good one.

QUASI FULL BODY
Warmups: Bar only GMs and squats, plate raises, KB swings
Squat: 95x5, 135x5, 185x5, 225x5, 260x2, 275x1, 205x8 (paused)
Deadlift: 225x5, 315x3, 365x3, 405x3x3
SLDL (done as a stretch): 135x10
Hammer Seated Press: 100x15x2, 110x15, 120x15 ss with
Hammer Iso Row: 282x10, 332x10x3, 282x12
Cable Hammer Curl (rope): Down the rack x 100
Walking Shrug & Hold: 45lb plates x 30 shrugs / 85 paces x 3
Incline Board Leg Raise: 25,20,20
KB Swing Tabata: 16k x 13,14,12,13,12,12,12,13
Walk: 3 miles

Bodyweight: 166.1

* Squats were weakish, but not horrible, considering the time off.
* Very happy with the pulls. Tried dropping my hips lower to make the quads do some work for a change and take some of the pressure off my lower back. I don't like the way it feels, but even the third triple with 405 was only an RPE 8. So, I'm thinking stay the course. Wanted to finish with some deficits, but my knees and lower back let me know it was time to move on.
* Swam a lot of laps yesterday, and consequently, had shoulder DOMS. So, I only lowered the bar to chin level on the presses. By the way, I do not like swimmers' physiques. Their muscles are too smooth and long. However, just a few hundred yards a few times a week leans my midsection out pretty quickly.
* Did the rows with both close and wide grip. Wide hits the lats harder, but I like it both ways (Ooooo, kinky!).
* I most often do tabata with front or goblet squats, but kettlebell swings were pretty cool, too. Awesome finisher.
