What makes a good government? Is it one that gives the majority of people what they want? Or is it one that has a vision and gets things done with a greater plan in mind (in their opinion, for the better)?

What you speak of is the difference between a democracy and socialism. The US is actually neither. It's a republic, which is, what I believe, makes it better.

Unfortunately, the government has been making this country more of a democracy and socialist

Lastly, another of our current issues is the minority dictating the majority. This can be an even worse scenario than the above.

This has been the problem throughout the ages.. Gov'ts are full of idiots. Our Founding Fathers were all hard working businessmen, Farmers, Traders etc. Most only became ''politicians'' through necessity -- War for Independence

Granite... But on the flip side of the coin, I would argue that the majority of society are idiots.

shortz it's funny you say that because in the published world freedom index, america's rank is dropping and now is like #20 on the list, so people are less free and the government is taking away freedom.

If we are to include fictional places, then maybe Lord Ventinari's leadership could be pretty good: Tyranny but developed to such a degree it's beneficial to everyone.

Real life? I'd have to go for the latter of the choices.

This is so true. Reluctant citizens, drafted by their friends and neighbors, were considered the ideal. Humbleness was a virtue. I think James Madison is the one who said that any man so ambitious and arrogant to actively seek public office was probably unfit for it.

Precisely! I always say the people that would be best for president rarely ever run for president, because they know the decisions to be made and the job itself almost takes a superhuman to do it well. Many years ago, government officials were not career politicians either. They were simply townsfolk that did it in their spare time, volunteers if you will. They did it because they felt like they had to.

There is no doubt that the most efficient form of gov't is a benevolent dictatorship. Unfortunately, no human being has the intelligence, wisdom and capacity to prevent power to corrupt, and consequently we're left with less efficient models of gov't to deal with.

I think the constitutional republic that the U.S. put together was truly remarkable given the young age of democratic principles at that time. It's amazing that they foresaw the dangers of centralized gov't. Unfortunately, the U.S. has been consistently been taking power away from the states and centralizing such power. Consequently, "federalism", while not completely dead, is dying on the vine in the U.S. And, IMO, we're paying the piper for it.

Not just because the Dems are presently in charge. The repubs are just as incapable of knowing what's best for all of us, even though both parties like to pretend they do. No size fits all for the 50 states. And for any given state, no size fits all for all the counties in that state. And for any given county, no size fits for all towns within that county. Consequently, pushing power down to the local level will always result in more accountability to the citizens, and more liberty/freedom to the people.
