tks boys, who do you guys think was the greatest local bodybiulder, i will tell you whom i think it was , i might surprise a few. My first input will be what happened in 1969 when bodybiulders began to grow, when we said goodbye to the 15in arms.

well i think its difficult to compare bodybuilders from different eras..but judging from local & international results i think it would b between Armando Buttigieg, Harold Bonsfield & Charles Duca..what do u think?

I have not forgotten my promise, I will write about who is the best bodybuilder ever, but I have a few people who promised me old photos and they have not delivered as yet. To day I am going to relate to you bodybuilders buddies out there how Harold Bonsfield won his first Mr. Malta.
In the good old days there weren't so many gyms on the island, but bodybuilding was booming, there was a very good gym down at valletta near Victoria Gate, Harold being from Valletta started training there, later on he went to train at the cottonerra Barbell club.We use to have lots of foreigners bodybuilders who use to a a prolong stay, one of these was a colourful hungarian guy who goes by the name of Andrew Irsi, which also happened that he trained at the Valletta Gym.For you young maltese bodybuilders let me tell you that back then we use to have around four bodybuilding contests each year, apart from the Mr Malta we use to have the Mr Labour, there was always gyms competing against each other, etc, also and this was a beauty, the were no restrections, anyone could enter whatever contest one's desire. Also of special note was that there use to be sub titles, like the best arms, leg shoulders, most muscular etc, so the mix was quite good.
As i sad being a colourful as he was Andrew took it on himself to organize this contest, in actual fact two contests, with the winner going in the NABBA Universe. The first contest was held at the depiro Hall in sliema, Armando buttigieg was the clear winner, the second contest which was held at the old Labour Hall in Marsa about three months latter, two British bodybuilders came over to pose, one was Brian Eastman, which Iam happy to say we became good friends, the other was Jhon Citrone, it was a first that we was a human body blowing up a hot water bottle.Let me put you in the picture For Andrew for all he knew, Armando was going to the NABBA universe,as he figured that there wouldn't be any one else to give him a run for his money, but unknown to all I was training like a possesed demon.Me and my parttner George Saliba were hammer it away it out , we started doing cardio ( running) and I believe we were the first that started dieting on a very low carb. diet. When all the dust was setteled and done the results were out, the contest was named Mr Medetterean, and the winners are Best Arms Harold Bonsfield, Best Chest Lorry fabri, Best Abs Lorry Fabri, Best Back lorry fabri, Best shoulders Lorry Fabri, most Muscular Lorry fabri, Best poser Armando Buttigieg, Overall winner ARmando Buttigieg.I never cared much for any contest becouse my love was down at the gym not the stage, i admit I was hurt , hurt by knowing that and i say this with all honesty Brian Eastman told me that for the judges i should had won, it was also confirmed by Andrew himseif when he told me that Armando was already booked to enter the universe, here i am not putting down my good friend Armando ,becouse he was always on top of the game, but for me that contest killed all the fire i had for competion.
And here enter Harold, after that set back i swore that i will not enter another contest again,a month or so latter Joe was organizing his Mr Malta, for a whole month joe use to come down to Qormi in his old Morris trying as he could to change my mind, i was even guranteded that i would win no matter what, but history was created by me sitting out the Mr malta and Harold Historical having a run of four mr Malta, so Harold own me one. keep pumping buddies

hi blade, today i laugh with the things we did back then, the lack of equipment was replaced by the fire we had in our bellies, no padded benches, cardio machines, or a rack full dumbells, bumbells we made ourself. The training was on a split routine each body part trained twice a week, very heavy training i mean lots of weight, reps in the range of 6 to eight, on special days we even went up to 20s, back then larry scott use to preach the burn, were you have to do a sort of forced reps, squat days were the worse, couse doing 25s with a bar load to its max, it was plain stupped, but we were happy, one day i will write about the equipment we use to use.Set where never higher then 4, and we always used 4 different exercises. No rocket science, one and half hours of sheer pleasure, we use to drink lots of water, and as soon as we finished we use to have this home brew which consisted of egg white powder skinned milk and you might laugh baby powder (sort of like cow and gate) all ready in a flask for it to be drunked off as if it was a magic potion, the taste was horrible. For diet 6 whole eggs for breakfast, one glass of my magic potion, and my supplements, at ten some fruit, noon a tuna salad plus supplements, at 3 more supplements plus coffee, train evenning either fish or meat plus salad, more supplements. Running at 5.30 in the morning, no more then 20minutes. Supplements i was a great believer in multivitamins (about 5 a day) liver tabs, vit c and b yeast tab.2 primabolan tabs.iron, cod liver oil, vit e and the chemist use to give me some digestion tabs, forgot there name, that's in a nut shell what was going on. keep pumping

In my opinion, nowadays we're too spoilt.

Some go to the gym to socialise, others are terrified even when hearing the phrase leg-workout, others want nice abs but haven't got the will power to diet or even better, they want to lose fat just from their mid-section.

I can imagine that the home made brew Fabri mentioned didn't taste good, but nowadays you still find guys complaining that their protein shake doesn't taste like ice-cream milkshake or that the multivits do not smell nice.

Anyway, maybe nowadays some prefer doing the shortcut way rather than sticking to the basics i.e. proper nutrition, supplementation, dieting and hard training.

although the taste was empty tasteless abelaj I use to love it , back then taste was not important, you ought to taste it when i use to put some wheat germ oil. I agree with you today every body wants that fast fix, nobody is in love with the weights its all cosmatic, i see guys using the 100 dumbell incline press, first they only lower it half way, which in fact the are working their shoulders not their chest, secondly their trainning partner is having an arm workout himself, and to top it all they will not do more then 4 reps. Today the hardcore GYMS are gone, we use more machines, but the shame of it all is that there is no quantity of hardcore bodybuilders, and the quality is numerical., there was a time when there would be 30 competetors in a show. The standard is high today but if ( and i can say this to all olders bodybuiders) we had the supplements , gear and what have you back then we could have reached a higher level,in my time I was a solid 95kg with a 29 waist, but that is progress, back then we didn't complain that the fans or aircondition were not on, we use to think that if we sweat it's good for defenition, but every era is different, isee mine now through the eyes of nostalgia, today is today and in 25 years time people like Blade will be romancing today and the nostalgic feeling will be the same. keep pumping

I just put my thinking cap on , feel like a million bucks, trained chest and back today, love that pump up feeling, if i don't want to sound like a two bob watch, I feel eager to hit a few lat spread and side chest poses, but i better sit where i am and finish what i have started. Today i am going to sit with you and open up my life book , and we shall go to the page marked 1988.
About a couple of years before our story a few friends of mine look me up with the idea of splitting from the IFBB Malta and organize our own bodybuilding ASS. After lots of deliberation it was agreed that John Grima will be president, and i'll be the secretary, with Tony gambin and george Saliba as members, at this stage Vince Balzan was out of the picture.THe first two shows where held at THe corinthia and the Phenicia, both contest were held with a dinner, on both occasion we had foreign bodybuilders doing posing at the show.Press conference and after party were organized
One of the reasons the ASS. was started was becouse we where in a bottle neck a status quo in bodybuilding, no money was in the sport, no guest posers, contest were organized very poorly, there was no flair,so we thought that for us to be a success we needed a good sponsor we needed to pump money into the sport, we found one in Chemimart, Mr R Fava was a dream come true, in the three years i was involved in the ASS.we had money that bodybuilders never saw before, we sponsored bodybuilders to compete, we got over here around 24 male and females bodybuilders, among them Basil FRancis, Frank Richard, and oh i forgot his name , but he won the NABBA universe about 6 times, each year 3 bodybuilders were send to compete abroad.Back then we had flair at one time we even managed to sell the show to the st George's lido for a thousand maltese pounds (that's was money back then)what we always did was that we always reinvested into bodybuilding, and here enters Mr Balzan he was made the tresurer of the ASS.
Last go back to 1988 , around april i recieved a letter from a certion Prof. Baggio, informing me that the palestra World Gym of Orbassano in collaboration with the FNCF WPF are to organize a Mr Europe contest to be held at the sport center in Torin on the 25/06/88,back then there was no holding back, i went to see our sponsor with the infornation i had in hand , a week after i got the reply that we can send two competitors, that cool, both Vince and myself were in pretty desent shape so it was agreed that we will be competing.Vince back then was a bit of a single minded person, and half hearted we left for Torin.
What we found was something that was not expected, it looked like that we were not the only ones that were feed up with the IFBB, lots of the big heads present were ex IFBB people, there was Denis Stallard, which looks like he was playing the cards although the Host an italian Gym owner and business man how was trying to infiltrate into Fassi kingdom was playing God.The next day we arrived a congress was held, there were people from the state, england , france, russia, and every part of europe, the push was there to start something new,but the homework was not done properly, there were to many chiefs, but no leader, nobody was trusting anybody, most of them were owners of magazines, food suppliments, they were somebody in there country, but on the world markets they were unknows. In all the chaos, getting nowhere, with egos as bidg as the universe itsef

i had to say something, in actual fact i said a lot, i had nothing to lose, just wanted to show them that you do not kill a gaint by fighting against oneself, if no plaining was done this whole thing would never take off, they were blowing hot air into a holed ballon, to cut a long story short being a nobody and not i had nothing at stake, i was asked to be the SECRETARY, which i declined, three months later i was still recieving from Denis if i was interested, but how could you be interested into something that does not make sence.
We took part in the contest were i placed 6th, we still had a few days left at our desposal so Vince desided that we were to visit an aunty of his up in Genoa, we meet a few of his relatives which i must say they were out of this world, nice people too nice people, the trouble was that this aunt did not have enough space for us, so they gave us their double bed and Vince and myself had to spend two nights sleeping together, after that experience i think i understanded Vince a lot better, and deep down is is a very good guy.

----keep pumping boys

As promised, I have finished my first week, I have done chest/back shoulders/arms, and legs, that took me Monday to Wednesday, Thursday I have done chest/ back, and Friday I did shoulders/arms again. While the first cycle was done really heavy the second cycle was more on volume them heavy weights, pump is fantastic. Three days, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I went on a 45minute walk, which was done early in the morning on an empty stomach.Supplimentation is very high, two daily shakes were used, diet was something like, breakfast, oats banana, one glass of milk and a shake, plus supplements, these were taken after my walk, two hours latter I train, as soon as I finish my workout, I’ll have a shake, an hour later I’ll have a whole chicken. Two to three hours latter I’ll have some rice and tuna, a large green tea and my second suppliments, three hours later I’ll have a bowl of nuts, three hours later I have my dinner, which could be chicken, alone or with rice, again I’ll have my supplements. My conclusion is that due to the age factor my recuperation is not what it uses to be, I’ll do it for 6 weeks but I guess this is going to take the hell out of me.

I'm not old but have been lifting for about 15yrs, still a natty as well. My training partners laugh at me for being a pussy, I prefer to think of myself as disciplined.

One of the things I have learnt over time?.. Better to undertrain than overtrain.

Cool idea for a thread btw ;)

I'm 44, been training since I was 18. I agree that it's better to undertrain that overtrain - especially the older and less forgiving the body gets.

Recovery plays an important role here, However, the mind will know if you under train. Nutrition and rest is a must. If overtraining can convince some ones mentality of a "good" training sesh, then are they really overtraining?

Hormones change the game. At 56 I am at my lowest BF since my mid-thirties. Almost as strong as I was natty at 235 now at 203. I **** my wife every single day. That was getting on her nerves. Put her on a little GH/Var and T3. Me GH/Test and something else in and out (Var/NPP/Tren/Mast). This is getting good!
