Because most of them lock you in for a year or two and half of the members signed up for New Years and never show up after March.

A lot of the non franchise gyms don't stay in business. Most of the "hard core" gyms struggle to make it.

Technically, I get paid $10 per year for my gym membership... My health insurance pays a buck fifty per year and my company pays another hundo towards a gym membership. It only costs me 240 per year though.
