Can i make muscles without following diet?

I didn't start gaining muscle until I started paying attention to my diet (1.5 to 2 grams of protein per lb of bodyweight and slightly above maintenance calories) and tracking everything I ate. Prior to that, I either didn't gain anything, or when I gained weight, it was mostly fat.
