This is not a simple question so the answer isn't simple either. When it comes down to it, it really depends and realistically it depends on the individual. First of all they say nothing works for ever and its very true your body adapts to everything so long as what you are doing is consistent you will adapt to that being the regular. Which means if your used to sprinting then sprinting won't be as affective, if your a long distance runner then long distance won't work so well for you. Usually sprinters hold less fat because sprinting pace is usually different so it's not always consistent. Exercise for exercise its the high intensity rather than paced largly because of the adaptation piece. Also because it targets fat in a different way, long distance burns fat calorie by calorie trying to run into bodyfat calories. Short bursts/high intensity more directly targets the fat, it is more metabolic and the way in which is burns the fat is different. Also calorie wise burns more calories outside the gym than inside. Long distance runners will run longer than sprinters so if you were to change that variable and make them go for the same amount of time then sprinters would be winning easily. So it really depends, it depends on a lot of things. Hope that answers it somewhat.
