Tonawanda News — A Kenmore man was arrested by New York State Police after he was stopped for going 26 miles over the speed limit on the I-290 Tuesday in the Town of Tonawanda and found with steroids and other related devices.
Michael A. Vazquez, 23, was stopped at 12:40 p.m. by Trooper Michael Niezgoda as he was heading eastbound along the interstate, after he was caught on radar going 81 mph in a 55 mph zone.
A quick file check conducted by the trooper showed Vazquez's license was suspended for failing to answer a court summons for another vehicle-related charge in Cattaraugus County.
A search of Vazquez's vehicle revealed "numerous hypodermic needles and three glass vials containing sterile testosterone," according to a state police statement issued Wednesday.
Sgt. Joseph Wilkinson, of the state police, said while steroid use is still widely available, its appears less popular than it previously had.
"They're still out there," he said. "But I think a bigger problem is the pills."
Vazquez was charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminally possessing a hypodermic needle and third degree aggravated unauthorized operation of a motor vehicle.
