LAFAYETTE — A Jennings man has pleaded guilty in federal court to importing anabolic steroids from China, liquefying the tablets and powder then pouring the muscle-building substance into vials for distribution.

Regan Chase Benoit, 25, last week admitted to U.S. District Judge Patricia Minaldi that he was guilty of importing and possessing with intent to distribute the steroids, U.S. Attorney Stephanie Finley said.

Finley said U.S. Postal Service workers on May 24 inspected a package from China and found it had one kilogram of anabolic steroid powder, and the package had a Jennings address.

On May 30, a woman picked up the package at a post office in Jennings, then during questioning she said the package belonged to Benoit.

On each of the two counts, Benoit faces up to 10 years in prison, a $500,000 fine and two years supervised release once he’s released. Minaldi set sentencing for Dec. 5.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the Jennings police investigated the case.
