It's actually all lats and momentum. Shoulders aren't really used at all.
It's not meant to build muscle. It's more of an endurance movement
as it takes a lot of air to string them together. Nobody in crossfit
considers it a real pull up. It's a butterfly kip and it's used
in a race, not for hypertrophy.
It does look kind of ridiculous but it gets the job done
in a timed competition.
Forgive me CTJ because I think your cool as hell but I disagree completely. It is all momentum using your rotator cuffs as a hinge. That's no more a lat workout than jogging is a quads workout.
Okay so it's for a race... To prove what? Certainly not to prove who can do the most pullups in the lest time, cause that aint no pullup.
