Selanne, who turns 42 on July 3, has 663 career goals (12th alltime) and potted an impressive 26 (along with 40 assists) this past season, when he played all 82 games for the first time since 2006-07.

OTTAWA (AP) -- The Ottawa Senators say they have agreed to terms with Norris Trophy finalist Erik Karlsson on a seven-year contract extension.

The deal was announced by the team on Tuesday, one day before Karlsson will find out if he was picked as the NHL's top defenseman for the recently completed season. Karlsson will reportedly earn $45.5 million over the course of the new contract.
"I'm very happy," Karlsson said from Las Vegas, the site of Wednesday's NHL awards ceremony. "All the discussions we've had have been good discussions. It's been fair, no backstabbing or anything like that. We have a lot of respect for Ottawa's organization.

"(General manager Bryan Murray) has done a terrific job with Ottawa as long as he's been here. I have full confidence in him and in the organization, as well."

The 22-year-old Karlsson, who could have become a restricted free agent this summer, led NHL defenseman last season with 78 points.

Rob Zombie, who directed and produced the 2007 remake of Halloween, will change gears and write, direct and produce a new film about the Philadelphia Flyers of the 1970s, according to a report by Mike Fleming of Deadline.com.

The film, titled Broad Street Bullies, will track the Flyers’ emergence from an expansion team to a physical, title-winning squad during the 1970s.

The Flyers support Zombie’s plan for the film, Fleming reports. He writes that Zombie wants the film to be “Rocky meets Boogie Nights on ice.”

“Each character involved is more outrageous than the next,” Zombie said. “The backdrop of the turbulent year of 1974 is perfect for this ‘stranger than fiction’ sports tale.”

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Geno and the Swedes were hockey's biggest winners in Vegas.

Pittsburgh center Evgeni Malkin won the Hart Trophy on Wednesday night, becoming the NHL's most valuable player for the first time. Three Swedish players also claimed major trophies at the annual NHL Awards postseason ceremony, but the Penguins' Russian superstar claimed three awards for himself.

Malkin won the Hart for the first time at the Wynn Las Vegas casino, beating out Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist and Tampa Bay scorer Steven Stamkos. Malkin also collected the Art Ross Trophy as the league scoring champion and the Ted Lindsay Award from his fellow NHLPA members as the NHL's best player.

"It's the best day of my life," said Malkin, known to teammates and fans as Geno. "It's very exciting."
