NEW YORK (AP) -- NHL labor negotiations hit a standstill after talks broke off on Friday, two weeks before the league has threatened to lock out its players.

NHL Players' Association executive director Don Fehr announced that the NHL asked that talks be "recessed" after the union presented its latest proposal during negotiations held at the league's headquarters in New York.

Fehr said the union's latest proposal "did not bear fruit."

The NHLPA's latest offer came three days after the NHL made its first counterproposal. After asking the players to cut their share of hockey revenue from 57 to 43 percent, the NHL upped its proposal to have the players get a 46 percent share over a six-year deal.

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) -- The Edmonton Oilers signed forward Jordan Eberle to a six-year, $36 million contract extension Thursday.

The move comes a little over a week after the Oilers signed forward Taylor Hall, Eberle's roommate, to a seven-year, $42 million extension.

The 22-year-old Eberle, a 2008 first-round draft pick, still has a year to go on his entry-level contract. He had 34 goals and 42 assists in 78 games last season.

"Obviously me and Taylor want to be a part of this team for a while," Eberle said. "That's why we signed this way. I think it signifies the young core of the group wanted to be here.

"We see the direction the team is going and that's in a forward direction. I think this year is definitely going to be a big year for us as far as developing our name as a team. Our success in the past couple of years hasn't been nearly where we want it to be and next year is going to be a huge stepping stone for us."

Penguins teammate Evgeni Malkin was the first player to float the idea that Sidney Crosby might join the expected migration of top-flight NHL players to the KHL or European leagues in the event of a labor lockout. Crosby’s agent isn’t nixing the notion.

Malkin said he’ll play for Metallurg and Crosby might eventually join the KHL.

“I think he won’t go to the KHL right away. He will see how the situation develops. I see that the league and the PA have started to come closer. Perhaps the lockout won’t continue for the entire year. That’s why a lot of North American players won’t go to Europe until the very last moment. A lot of them are a bit afraid of Russia. But the best hockey league in the world after the NHL is here.

“And if the lockout is announced for the entire season, then Crosby may come. He loves to play and won’t be able to live an entire year without hockey.”

Today, Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Tribune tweets that agent Pat Brisson confirmed his client’s potential interest.

OTTAWA (AP) -- The Ottawa Senators have signed forward Kyle Turris to a $17.5-million, five-year contract extension.

The 23-year-old Turris scored 12 goals and 17 assists last season, both career highs. The deal, which is worth an average of $3.5 million per year, will keep Turris in Ottawa through the 2017-18 season.

Turris was acquired by the Senators in a December 2011 trade with the Coyotes that sent defenseman David Rundblad and a second-round draft pick to Phoenix.

In 186 career games, Turris has 31 goals and 44 assists with 70 penalty minutes.
