Hard to believe that the attitude toward free speech is under such significant attack by those in power within today's most powerful academic and media institutions.

A few money quotes:
It is a “mistake to think of free speech as an effective means to accomplish a more just society,” Georgetown law professor Michael Seidman said in 2018.

Because the United States suffers from too much free speech exercised by too many people, Emily Bazelon of the Yale Law School wrote in the New York Times, our beleaguered democracy is “drowning in lies.”

The goal, according to the New Yorker’s Masha Gessen, is to establish and maintain “the sphere of legitimate controversy.”

I always hate people who abuse free speech to make anti-free speech arguments. Ought to be some kind of punishment for people who make speeches against free speech, lol.

I'm always amazed by those who wish to curtail the speech of others. They always presume that they, or someone in agreement with their values, will be the person in charge of deciding what speech gets restricted. Why in the world would anyone think that would be the case?

The same people who go on and on about Trump being some evil dictator somehow believe that those making the decisions on what will be restricted won't be an evil dictator. I want to tell them, "OK, we'll let Trump nominate the censors for the allowable speech committee" and watch their heads explode.

What they won't be honest about is that once they obtain power they will use speech restrictions to maintain their grip on power. That's why they're not concerned with who's in charge. They expect to use this power to stay in charge forever. History says otherwise.

Nice read. All the shit going on with censorship/etc. has George Orwell looking like a straight clairvoyant.
