here's what I know... it takes 3500 cal to put 1 lbs so thats 500 extra cal above maintenance/day to gain 1 lb. As for an optimum level, I'd say that the slower the gain, the more likely solid it'll be than say 3-5lbs/week.

your body would have a tough time putting on more then 1lb of muscle a week on (off cycle of course)..
so if your gaining 3-5lbs a week.. guess what.. your gaining fat..
in keeping it to 1-2lbs a week your bulking but keeping fat weight to a minimum..
