I notice that all the big supplement companies are moving away from using pro bodybuilders to represent their products, back in the day muscletech had most of the top pros, these days you look at muscletech, bsn etc you cant find pro bodybuilders on their site, not sure what cause this trend, is it because everybody now knows that bodybuilders are on the juice and dont really use the products, being a pro does not get you much money these days.

The reason is that too many attention whores have promoted products for free (discount codes, "brand ambassadors", Reps etc). Why would anyone pay a premium price for a Pro when 3million istagram mopes will do it for free and reach more consumers thru social networking than Print ads can.

Also some people have a better and bigger fan base for the type of product they market. look at frank mcgratb, rarely competes but the young kids love him.

exactly! plus the market for bodybuilders is relatively small compared to the average skinny jean wearing american new age 'boys' that go to planet fitness

Maybe because people smartened up and realized that pro BB didn't get that big from protein shakes...

Actually no they are probably all that stupid still.

I think that bodybuilders have limited appeal to the masses. Look at mainstream commercials. Every male is a skinny jeans bearded slob in an inter racial relationship. That's what the people want.

20 years ago movie theaters were filled with stars in good shape..... now we have a Thor who looks like a small Crossfitter ( I like Crossfit but those guys can't be 300lbs and perform well at that sport)......

The money in the industry comes from the bottom - the uneducated gym rat looking to score secret pills from the back room of GNC... and the general population is all about being wussies right now.
So, companies are getting more return by spending less than pro bodybuilders demand to sponsor top athletes from more accessible sports like Crossfit ( and to a lesser extent Powerlifting)...
