Ya know back in 1995 during an aikijustu class - I broke my spine- consider the training is actually practicing to bealr a limb each time we project someone throught the air- no mats in my old dojo either. Anyway down on the lower back L4/5 - In 1995 my Doc who pioneered this method of surgery at NE Baptist in Boston- used shavings of my hip bone to pack between the cracks of my spine and laminea- no screws no metal rods- but it would take 3 months to set and 2 years to harden. AFter the surgery I had to get an MRI done every three months and when I began my rehab after it set it centered around streghtnening and thickening the erectors and muscles along the spine and the transverse abdominus ( the rotaters) - NOT THE ABS like many means of rehab- Of course I took took 10 thousand milligrams of different forms of calcium- Im a huge holistic buff and my doc actually stated that my bones hardened more quicker than anyone he had ever seen so he told me to keep doing that. My rehab consisted of therapy 3 X weekly for 3 hours- One hour of high step aerobics, Hour of flexibility at the end NOT TO WARM UP. and 3 hours of weigths-
3 sets of weighted stiff legged deads from floor to waist, then knees to shoulder with what I worked up to 300 pounds
3 sets of nautilus type back machine with 300 percent of my bodyweight ( we all had one person take us around and do all the writing)
3 sets 90 degree hypers
3 sets of reverse hypers
That was in 1995 I still do a variation after my back or hamstring 2 x week. I stll practice falling and throwing, I have no limitations with weights- I was advised to never wear a belt as it weakens the muscles- my rehab is to make the erectors my support belt. I do heavy squats, heavy dead lifts, heavy barbell rows- I do more weight now than when I was 25.
Heres my current maintenance:
3 sets hyperextensions 25 reps hold peak contraction for 3-5 seconds
2-3 sets of nautilus type machine 300 pounds 20 reps
2-3 reverse hypers or Louie Simmons machine 20 reps
always after hammys do stiff legged deads with 4- 6 plates 12-15 reps

To someandone regarding you squatting issue. Not to toot my own horn but ive outlined what is actually the most advanced an proven rehab for various back and core issues. This is back rehab for power athletes. Note no ab bullshit. Muscles along spine are emphasized followed by glut and then address abs. Flexibility is overrated but absolutely needs also to be done. Check it out. Note that my issues here were the final straw to get my cscs cert as i have worked at the place that miraculously cured me of all back pain. At 45 never wear a belt yet i do heavy squats deadlifts , 1000 pound vslf raises with weight on my back. Heavy presses. Try to do all my exercises standing for core and functionality. Plus 2 to 4 hours daily on seminars 8 teaching and or training bujutsu. That means lifting 200 pound men to toss across room an allowing them to slam me on my spine No matts either in grass or pavement . My back is punished daily and my routine keeps me pain free and functional. I also have over 200 students and 67 bb clients many combat soldiers

man that's good to read...i'm battling with 4 discs out myself (L5/S1 and 2 up, and one in the middle of my back)...but not an actual fracture.

Awesome to see you come back from that...

#1...how did you get to make time do do that 3x a week for that long?
#2...what type of dr/physical therapist did you use? did you go to the same hospital or did you use a spine specialist?

> Well I had alot of sick time from my job - plus I had flexible hours. My exercise and training are of utmost importance to me- Ive honestly put them number 1 always- hence the no wife , no kids deal LOL When I broke it - my doc looked at the MRI's the Xrays and stated that if I wasnt so strog from training that my laminae would have cut through my spine- Training is my love , my obsession

Where I live I reserached all the surgeon that had operated on athletes- for example one office did the Kennedy's , Larry BIrd and Jean Ratelle -70's hockey player of Bruins and NY Rangers - he had surgery BEFORE playing pro hockey. New England Baptist Hospital was at the time considered one of the best in the world- The best orthopeadic surgeon around accepted my health insurance - I also did the PT associated with them, now called the New England Bone and Joint Institute. I had been to 12 Neuroligists and not one would touch me, this guy actually performed a procedure he invented that is now common practice. So in your area first see if any football or hockey players or all the rich politicians or celebrity people go for similiar procedure- thats who you want

I would thank you for that but I'm all out for now. So here's an old fashioned one, thanks. I have more to ask you, but still working right now.
