MONTREAL — Five suspects were arrested Thursday as the Sûreté du Québec moved to dismantle a ring in the Valleyfield area that specialized in loansharking, extortion and the sale of steroids.
“Seven search warrants are being executed, in businesses, homes and vehicles,” the force added in a statement.
Three commercial buildings valued at about $465,000 have been seized.
“Investigators determined that many of the suspects arrested loaned sums of money to individuals at interest rates that exceeded the limits under the Criminal Code,” the SQ statement said.
“In certain cases, threats were issued.”
The probe began in December 2012, when “we received a tip from the public,” SQ Sgt. Mélanie Dumaresq said.
Investigators concluded that steroids were sold through businesses, including a Salaberry-de-Valleyfield gym.
An accounting of the quantity of cash seized — along with the type and quantity of drugs — would be available later, Dumaresq said in early afternoon.
