LifeXMD.com - October 15, 2012 - It has long been recognized by medical researchers that low testosterone levels can put men at high risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, even early death. Recent studies have shown that testosterone replacement therapy can help reduce these risks.

Medical experts believe that declining testosterone levels, a common condition of male aging, are linked to a number of negative symptoms. These include decreased libido and energy, loss of bone and muscle mass and depression. Some researchers have also tied low testosterone to “metabolic syndrome” which is a group of risk factors that can increase a man’s chances of developing diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

Recent studies, presented at The Endocrine Society's annual meeting, indicate that bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) can help in a variety of ways.
One study showed that BHRT significantly reduced abdominal fat, total cholesterol, LDL ("bad") cholesterol and triglycerides while helping to raise HDL ("good") cholesterol. In a second study, researchers found that both older (63+) and younger men realized these benefits of testosterone replacement. (1)

Farid Saad of Bayer Schering Pharma, co- author of these two studies, stated, "We conclude that if elderly men have a deficiency of testosterone, it is worthwhile to treat them with testosterone."

In another study, funded by the pharmaceutical firm, Novo Nordisc, researchers followed 2,000 men (aged 29-70), studying causes of death. Men with low testosterone levels at the beginning of the study had a more than 2.5 times greater risk of dying during the next 10 years compared with men with higher testosterone. These low testosterone research participants also tended to be fatter and had a higher prevalence of diabetes and high blood pressure than the men with higher testosterone levels. This difference in mortality and disease was not explained by age, smoking, alcohol consumption, level of exercise or increased waist measurement, according to researcher author, Robin Haring, a Ph.D. of Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University in Germany.
