We are going the wrong direction with communications devices. A communications device is a computer that is expected to entertain people, be an arcade, surf the web, send voice, share files, take a picture, be a navigational tool, control banking and finances, etc. The more complicated/extended these devices become in their pursuit of being all things to all people the less secure they become. A communications device should do one thing and do it well. It should give someone the ability to communicate securely. The device should be exploit free, stable, easy to use, and have a long battery life. Only then should it be evolve to do more things.
In my opinion, a favorable security oriented communications device would be an open hardware two way pager, running a stripped down version of OpenBSD, with forced GPG/PGP/OpenPGP encryption for all messages.
