^^^This, we all have to work our asses off as 100's millions here in the USA depend on us , this doesn't even take into account the billions around the world that get our tax dollars handed out like a friggin Pez dispenser...Ohh and don't even think about cheating or stealing..The gov't hates competition.
I hear younguns bitch about their checks all the time, I tell them..''Look at the gross pay, what you REALLY make not the net. I don't think half even know what that is sadly

In all seriousness, keep your head up man, tough times dont last, tough people do.

Why do people spend so much time at work.

Why not spend less on house, car and stupid stuff, and work less ?

That extra time could be spent with friends, family, excercising, making healthy meals, engaging in hobbies and interests, talking a walk, trekking and camping, fishing, hunting, travel. I mean, just living your life...

Are we brainwashed by the system from early age. Having to spend most of the day in school and then do homework. Like that we should not develop time comsuming interests that could conflict future working "career".

The media and commercials brainwash us into this comsumer spending trap. But I am starting to wonder if it really makes us happy.

Great that you have extra time.. what if those people you mention do not have extra time? And what will you do with your extra time if you have no money.

The sad fact of life (for most) is that everything you wanted in your 20s only becomes affordable by your 40s... and by that time you have many more obligations that make affordable a word that makes you cringe.

IMO, more stress is created by not having money than having to work overtime at a job that makes you money...simple as that.

Working hard is easy when you are young, putting in 60-80 hour work weeks are just not an option when you are old, at least not for most of us. I do agree with the OP that you need to have a life outside of work, too many people either just work like slaves or don't work at all. It's all about balance. I will say however it is not so much how much you work as it is how much you save and set yourself up for the future. I am around many people who make a very good living and sadly many of them have not saved one dime. it is sad to see people who make 100k or more a year and they just live pay check to pay check.

I moved from the Big Easy to California 15 years ago. I make 4 times than I did in New Orleans. I actually enjoy my job. But despite the pay raise, guess what? I'm doing the same damn thing here that I did down South. And that is, living paycheck to paycheck. The cost of living here sucks. The taxes here sucks. But if I went back where I came from (since Katrina touched it a bit), the jobs that I worked are gone.

Before my injury, I was doing 48-52 hours a week. Sometimes the extra time helps stretch the paycheck, sometimes it's no difference. But we (myself, wife, 2 kids) manage to survive.

Well I plan to retire in my early 50's and so far it's more or less going to plan.

If that eventuates then I don't mind working my arse off... as long as I can enjoy a few nice things in life along the way

Some people (usually those with a strong work ethic) like having nice things. I am one of those people. Furthermore, there are two schools of thought. Some people live for today. They spend every dime they make on fun and/or party hardy carring little about their health of tomorrow. Or there are the people who exhibit restraint today inorder to live like kings tomorrow. I am the later.

Only thing I find with the later school of thought is that tomorrow is not promised.. I bet theres so many people that spent every single second trying to save up money for the future and when that time came they could no longer enjoy that (deceased, injured, whatever it may be)
So I tend to work hard to really just enjoy my life now.

No doubt. Nothing wrong with that mindset. I guess I model myself after my parents. They worked hard and took care of themselves and retired by 55 with a butt old of money. Now they spend their time doing what they want and traveling the world. Living like kings. But the point you make is valid. My dad has a bad cancer ATM and his future is unknown. So I can see both sides. I deviated from OPs meaning I think though. I just like nice things is all. I like to be able to buy what I want when I want. An excess of money does not make one more happy. But not having enough to provide basic things for yourself or your family does make one sad.

For instance, I could retire right now if I wanted. Move me and my family into one of my free and clear condos and live off the rent of the others. But I would not be able to take my kids on vacations. I would no longer drive a nice car. I could no longer go to nice dinners. Etc etc. not worth it to me.

Plus not working is no fun. It may be at first. But over time you will be so bored you want to shoot yourself. The best is retired and doing what you want each day to keep you busy. Not what you have to do each day. Your job could be having sex with the most gorgeous woman in the world. But if you had to do it every day day in and day out times 365 times 10 or 20 years you would hate it just as you hate your current job. No body likes having to do things. By nature people want what they can't have and don't want what is forced upon them.
