I have always thought that protonmail would take the route of hushmail eventually. You could use a vpn plus tor but I'm not as well read as I used to be to recommend anything.

Always use a reliable VPN. If this individual was using one the entire time even when creating an email account chances are it would have made it a lot harder for this to happen.
