"Gentrified," as in, People With Money Moving In?
Casual Boxing fans may not remember Riddick Bowe, but he was one of the Hwt Champions when Tyson's career began to slide. He, and Tyson, both grew up in Bed-Stuy under very un-gentrified circumstances. Me and the wife got lost there in a rental car once when we were trying to get from LaGuardia to "the Hamptons." Spotted NYPD parked nearby waiting for trouble and approached them for directions. Walked up to the car real humble-like, said "I don't wanna hold you up, but ……… " and the wise-ass cop said "You can't hold us up, we're the cops!" Fucker looked just like Cliff, the mailman from Cheers, but he didn't kneel on my neck, so I was good with that.
My great-grandfather was a higher-up in the NYPD and owned a 3 story home in Jackson Heights back in the pre-Serpico days when cops made a lot of "extra income." Heard Jackson Heights got un-gentrified and Dominican years later. Neighborhood high school baseball teams must be good though.
