By now you all know I am a caveman when it comes to all this social media bullshit and I am paranoid about security. I downloaded the Telegram App and it wants a phone number. Sure as shit I do not want to give them my regular number. I did download TextNow but I have to pay to see the verification code.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Thank you in advance.

I believe it’s just used to verify you’re a real person not a bot and text you an activation code to use the app.
Signal which is supposed to be highly secure and encrypted does the same exact thing. If you’re super worried I would suggest getting a burner phone perhaps. Text now and Pinger both cost money to get and keep the number if I recall. I’ve only used pinger before which works ok, but it’s still tied to your phone

Google voice is what i use… get my number and remove my original number tied to it… i can still get texts for confirmation to google voice so it works for tg

I use telegram for anonymity, you can block your phone #from being seen if your texting someone. It's a good way share those pics you don't want others to keep...self deleting feature. I haven't experienced any unsolicited texts or calls. I'd recommend it as I too am a little tech challenged and kinda paranoid in general.

Pretty much what the other guys have said. When you manually add contacts there will be a check box asking whether or not to share your number. Just select no. I've never had issues.

I appreciate the help and information. I will reattempt to get it going this weekend.

I probably will ask more questions. Stay tuned, lol.

At one time, I set up a completely fake account in Twitter and Facebook using a free anonymous virtual phone number. I know these services are still available. So once the test code is sent to verify your account, you can just send the code back. I closed my Twitter account but my fake Facebook account is still up and running.

Me too I don't trust anything online. I give no personal info ever.
