Ketsugo, thanks for the thread. It is interesting to learn a little more about the people in this community. FWIW, I did a quick research on your signature and from what you put forth in your story it seems to fit you quite well.

I am a Quality Manager for a chemical distribution company and have been in this position for 11 years and with the company for 16.5 years. My path here was certainly not direct. After high school I went to a junior college for a couple of years and then off to Texas A&M for a degree in oceanography. Unfortunately the path the degree plan had me take and my lack of discipline had me leaving after one year so I return to the junior college, got my associates degree and joined the navy. After 4 years in the navy I did not re-up and took my GI bill and returned to college, University of North Texas in Denton. After 3.5 years of study I earned a double major in Biology and Chemistry. My first job out of college was with the University of Texas Southwest Medical Center in Dallas where I was a lab tech performing microbiological testing on kidney cells. Really cool job, but the pay was pretty minimum. After one year the doctor I was working for was leaving research to focus on practicing medicine so I started looking for another job and ended up with a small regional company making chemical products for janitorial companies, school districts, etc. That also only lasted one year since business slowed down and the owner of the company made a mistake on a bid and lost a chunk of existing business and could no longer afford me. That was a pretty tough moment as my wife was 8 months pregnant. But the timing turned out to be impeccable as circumstances landed me with the company I am with now, which is a good company and the largest chemical distribution company in the world.

Since joining the company my family has grown to 2 boys and 2 girls (16, 14, 11, 9, respectively), 3 cats, 3 fish tanks, and one snake. All of my kids are very smart (almost always straight A's), but my oldest struggles the most with his teenager issues and other issues that will make life challenging for him. Before he quit playing, he was very good on the Viola. My youngest son is about to become a life scout and is entering high school next month where he will also be working on an associates degree. My oldest daughter has finished 5th grade and is moving to middle school where she will try her hand at the clarinet. She is artsy and quite talented. My youngest daughter enjoys soccer and will be trying her hand at academy soccer, which is what is done before they are old enough to play select soccer. If that goes well then she will be playing select soccer a year from now. And finally, my beautiful wife of 18 years does a fantastic job keeping up with the whole family while putting up with me and working part time at our church.

That is my adult life, I am 48 now, in a nut shell.

Retired police sergeant.
Developed a love for policing through watching shows like Beretta, Kojak and Charlie's Angels. Thought I could save the world...found out quick fast and in a hurry that I couldn't and that the world really didn't give a damn about me. Thought about doing five years and getting out. Five turned to ten turned to fifteen...and then I hit twenty years and rolled out. Did I make a difference? I like to think that I did in the lives of a few. But then I look back over my career and the funerals attended for fellow officers and I wonder if the profession is worth it.
The one thing that I envied was that soldiers get "Thank you for your service" and many are treated as heroes. But police officers very rarely get thanked...and when they are killed, many times, the comment is made "They knew what they signed up for and the possibility they would get killed." Each day I went 10-8, I prayed to return home to my children...and I was blessed that I did.
These days, I own a martial arts school...about to open a second location. I'm also a personal trainer and group x instructor. Most importantly, I am loving life!

I'm currently the CEO/General sales manager for one of the largest auto warranty companies in the nation. Started the new job back in February. Mrs. RedNeck insisted that I apply for it. So I did apply and interviewed. It was a customer retention position.... Keep people from canceling auto warranty policies.... Money was great, broke the company record my first month. Then continued to break my own records the next 2 months. Did so well, that they shut down one of their sales offices that wasn't producing the way it should, fired everyone and moved it to the same city as our corporate office. Now I'm running that and my office is out producing our California sales office. I have kids that are barely qualified to flip burgers making $7000+ a month right now, selling like champions.

I'm an independent commodities trader. My passion lies in strategy development.
I'm down to earth and an outdoorsman. I don't wear a suit or drive a foreign car.
I like both, however I don't have the care or need at the moment.
I enjoy the simple life with the bare necessities.

I've always loved those old cop / detective tv shows. Others I've loved for decades include Starsky & Hutch, Vegas, Quincy, and later Miami Vice. I know I'm forgetting many more.

Hey I'm veteran of DS and I'll thank ya! All my childhood friends are police . I hear you dangerous job even in small towns now . You and I alike - also have my cscs and I train soldiers and underground combat as I won't advertise, since most of my teacher traditionally did not . What I do need to borrow is the love of life- you can imagine in war I seen, but on my main career I see ugliest side of life and people . Not just the addicts living in abandoned dumpsters or walking through crack houses but the corruption I see in my state government is dispicable criminal and much of out tax dollars pay to cover up

Very interesting. That's where I think my son is headed. Very keen on investing. 24 years old and has a net worth of $100k already. Works for one of Canada's big 5 banks.

Starting young is the way to do it. I'm always a little surprised to come across people who hit 50 and realize it's time to "start planning for retirement". Those who wait that long are lucky to have low 6 figures accumulated at 60, while those who start at 25 and max everything out every year are multi-millionaires easily by 50 and several times over by 60. That's the power of compounding at work.
