A man and woman are facing multiple charges after police raided an alleged illegal steroid lab in a Hamilton Mountain home.

Sukhvinder Singh and Laura Kathleen Szoke appeared in a Hamilton court Saturday morning where they were formally charged with:

- Production of a controlled substance (anabolic steroids).

- Possession for the purpose of trafficking (anabolic steroids).

- Possession for the purpose of trafficking (methamphetamines).

Ontario Provincial Police say there are additional charges relating to cocaine and marijuana.

Both accused will be held in custody pending a bail hearing this week.

OPP drug enforcement operations co-coordinator Scott Mills said the investigation is ongoing.

“There were so many chemicals and pharmaceuticals, a lot of it was labelled, some of it was not labelled. It’s very, very hard to tell until we sit and dissect every exhibit,” said Mills, noting hundreds of items were seized.

For a residential-type setting, Mills said it was a big operation.

While OPP executed a search warrant around 10 a.m. Friday at the large, recently built detached home on Upper Wellington Street near Stone Church Road East, they discovered the performance image enhancing drug (PIED) lab.

“The warrant was for the production of a controlled substance, and what we found was evidence of production of a controlled substance and controlled substances we were searching for,” Mills said.

Officials on the scene, including Hamilton Police, Health Canada, Hamilton Fire and EMS, had to use the highest level of safety and take extra precautions because there were so many unidentified substances in the home.

Mills said so far they have identified PIEDs, cocaine and methamphetamine. Due to the ongoing investigation, Mills could not give more details about what led police to the Mountain home but did say the pair were not known to OPP drug enforcement prior to the probe.

Hamilton police would not comment on the accused, as it is an OPP investigation.

Most neighbours in the area who spoke to a reporter did not know Singh or Szoke, who moved into their home at the end of last year and kept to themselves. Residents who lived behind the house noticed two dogs, a Rottweiler and a smaller breed, that were often seen in the back yard.

Neighbour Vince Iacozza says he never noticed anyone coming in or out of the house since the couple moved in, but he came home around noon Friday to find road blocks and a heavy police presence.

What people do for money blows my mind. Mixing the sale or posession of that many substances is bound to get you arrested. Being a one stop shop never works.
