I had chickens for a few years. Then those little punks started bustin up their eggs and it go so out of hand, they went "free range". lol Eventually the wildlife killed them all. We do enjoy having a small garden though, but also learned that, around here, you can't grow anything that lays on the ground, or the rats etc eat them up. You have to find unique ways to grow them if you want to grow things like watermelon, cantaloup, etc

Shoulda kept the chickens with a Rooster. they kill rats, if you can take them wakin you at the crack of dawn. Only thing with chickens is you have to remove the eggs regularly. Nothing like fresh free range eggs

Roosters can be annoying as shit. lol They will wake you up at all kinds of insane hours, and it's not even close to morning!

if we were able to keep them just a little farther from the house, I think we would have gotten one or two though.

Plus the rooster can give you some semi developed eggs with the chickens. We use garden boxes cuz we have crappy clay.

Oh yeah, you have to stay on top of the egg collecting. You will start finding blood spots etc in your eggs with roosters too. If you don't mind that, no biggie, but some people are grossed out by them.

In Southeast Asia, fertilized, partially formed chicken embryos are a delicacy. It's called balut.
