ABINGDON, V.A. -- A Port Byron has been sentenced for his involvement in a conspiracy that illegally manufactured and sold pro-hormone/designer steroids, according to the United States Department of Justice.

50-year-old Matthew S. Greacen is being accused of selling the product which was marketed as a nutritional supplement when, in fact, it was a dangerous drug.

Prosecutors said Greacen was involved in the illegal importation of raw drug powders from China to the Danville, Va., area. The powders were then shipped to various locations across the country, including to Greacen's business, Nature’s Chemistry in Skaneateles.

The illegal drug contained methasterone, commonly known as Superdrol.

In court Greacen pleaded guilty to one felony count of conspiracy to defraud the United States Food and Drug Administration. He was sentenced in the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia in Abingdon after already pleading guilty to related federal charges.

“Selling dangerous drugs disguised as harmless dietary supplements places the health of U.S. consumers at risk,” said Special Agent in Charge Mark A. McCormack, FDA Office of Criminal Investigations’ Metro Washington Field Office. “Our office will continue to pursue and bring to justice those who ignore this very real threat to public health.”

Greacen was ordered to two years of probation with four months of home confinement and had to forfeit $55,000.

James Mills was Greacen's co-conspirator and he was also sentenced to two years of probation and had to pay a $1,000 fine.

Wow they got off easy. Importation misbranding and distribution and all they got was probation. No jail time.
