Interesting.....I actually met Lawrence Taylor, when he had his bar in East Rutherford, New Jersey, called L.T.'s, I was in the process of opening the largest strip club in NYC at the time called Scores of NY on 61st in the upper East side. Our supposed major investor knew him as he was a pretty well known Park Avenue attorney in NYC. While I didn't see him doing any crack or coke, I did suspect he had been doing quite a lot and was drinking plenty while we were there. Or course he had already retired at this time. I spent 21 years running some of the nations top strip clubs in Texas, FL, NYC, South Carolina and Hawaii and some of our biggest customers were pro athletes who aways played hard and tossed around a lot of money. I also remember Jim Kelly when he was the QB of the Houston Gamblers. He loved to party and loved the strip clubs. I have been around mosst of the biggest powerlifters and I just don't remember any of them that went to the clubs. Most powerlifer just don't have the money to toss around, no one makes any money doing this anyway.
Yeah man. Powerlifters are a different kind of insane. I'm talking more the Louie lifting with a trach kind of stuff. I lifted at a meet with Greg Panora. We were in the same flights all meet. I was at the top and he was the last lifter haha. So we were shooting the shit a lot during the downtime in the flights.
And while he was nice guy like most guys you meet through powerlifting, I left there thinking - this guy is totally off his rocker haha.
Oh you got me reminiscing now.
About 2010 I met Gene Rychlak at a meet in Pennsylvania. I’m 6’3” 320 and this guy is a couple inches taller than me and wider/thicker by a magnitude of two. Pictures make him look awfully big, and they don’t do him justice.
Anyways, I convince him to do a meet down in Maryland near where I’m stationed. He agrees and roughly a year later, he’s on his way down and he and his wife stayed with my wife and I. Keep in mind, his wife is close to my size, no joke, so we have the house stocked up with food and my little tiny wife is getting ready to serve a trio of Vikings all weekend, and instead, they went out to eat every single meal. And not sit-down places…gas stations, Costco, fast food of course, and whatever else was fucking terrible for you.
Such a nice guy, but certainly had neurological issues from something at some point in his life, and wound up dying fairly young, although I suppose just the right amount of time for how giant he was and how eat ate and lived.
Good times. That was around the time I competed with PillarOfBalance at one of Gene’s RPS meets. One of the few guys from the boards that I’ve met in real life.
We had an attorney who was a masters lifter that would headbutt a door phyching up to squat. Wildest shit I have seen. I saw another guy punch two holes in a can of beer and guzzle it before squats. I went to an attorney's office once and he had a big glass bowl of a variety of oral steroids on his desk. Most of the guys I lifted with where much more sane. Here, the THSPA, which is our big high school federation, has prohibited the use of smelling salts and slapping people before lifting. I guess they are trying to tame the beast some.Yeah man. Forget the exact year, OR the Fed, but didn't Gene get up to where He and Scott Mendelson were racing each other to 1000 lbs? And ... didn't Gene at some point, dump 1000, and survive it?Speaking of Gene Rychalk, here is a video my wife took of Gene benching 850. This was in 2008 at the Europa Powerfest. Great guy! ....
