Do sugar alcohols affect ketogenesis? I'm in keto again and I have all these "sugar free" lifesavers that I used for cheats on an old diet. They have 8g sugar alcohol which gives 8g of carbs. As I understand it, these are non-nutritive carbs and do not affect insulin and are not stored as glycogen. Any ideas?

Sugar Alcohols and Ketosis- Nutriton Standpoint

I think it has more or less to do with the type of sugar substitute you are ingesting... different "sugars" are broken down at different rates...Malitol is broken down 75% or something like that... so I guess you could throw yourself out of ketosis if it is primarily Malitol or something along those lines... but hey, I could be wrong. Just my two cents.

Short answer is yes and no, it depends what type of sugar alcohol you are ingesting. Obviously something like Sorbitol which is generally more common will not induce such a high insulin response but it does have some caloric impact.
