I’m from a small town in the Midwest, population of about 2500 residents. My town & surrounding small towns are dealing with a tragedy this week. I know some board members are within an hour of my home town, I ask if you heard about this in any way please don’t disclose the location.

Saturday August 10 sometime around 9-10 pm there was a horrible accident on one of the highways that leads to my home town. My 32 year old cousin & her 5 year old son came up on an incident that had the highway shut down. She was in line with many other vehicles just waiting to get past the incident & get home.

As she sat in traffic with her flashers on & doing a top speed of roughly 6 mph a foreigner driving a semi is traveling towards the incident. He has his windows tinted extremely dark & is watching tv or something similar in his truck. He hits my cousins vehicle at 75 mph smashing her between his semi & the one stopped in front of her. He also manages to kill another women that was in a different vehicle.

Thursday was the wake. When I say the funeral home was packed that’s an understatement. People were parking in every spot they could find. Pharmacy lots, child care facility, I found a spot at a car wash. The line filled the chapel, down the hall & started filling another chapel. It was the biggest show of support I have ever seen.

A local bar/restaurant had made a fb post saying he was donating a percent of all sales to help with expenses. He does this for different things, he has done this to pay off school lunches for families that just can’t afford it as an example.

Just to show our support and to thank this man 7 family members met up to eat at this restaurant. The owner found out who we were, I’m the only one he had met before & came back to offer his condolences. He asked if we needed anything. Of course he checked on our food & drink but he honestly was asking if we were “ok” ourselves. He came back again & offered to cater an event they had set up for her family on the house.

This morning he asked me to come to the restaurant & pick up the check for my cousin. I honestly couldn’t be any more proud to be from this small town. I can’t wait to draw my pension & move back. If any of you can relate you already know small town are just different.

OH Wally man, this is terrible. I'm so sorry.
But you are right about small towns and all the feels and support a community gives.

Sorry for your loss brother.

I grew up small town, 130 people. Currently live in one that is about 5,000 and it seems large to me. However, I still know everyone, good and bad.

I don't think any words can express the sadness that I feel right now. What a horrible tragedy, what a terrible waste of life, and how many live ruined and change because some a-hole wasn't paying attention to the road. We all get distracted now and again when you're driving a fucking semi there should not be any distractions. I'm not sure where you live and I haven't heard anything about this until now.

My condolences to all family members that are dealing with this tragedy.

It does speak volumes about small towns, knowing your neighbors, and caring about others. Unfortunately the world is heading in the wrong direction. My wife and I live in a moderately large city that has grown exponentially over the last 10 to 15 years and every day they're shootings and stabbing people being run over. It's so sad when I moved here when I was a child if you heard somebody getting killed it might be once every few months or longer. Now it's a daily occurrence and it's almost the norm.

Again I'm so sorry to hear if there's anything any of us can do you know we're family here just ask

God bless brother, this is terrible. I hated reading that. Things like this, just shouldn't happen. I hope all of you are doing as well as you can be. I appreciate you sharing the story with us. I would love to come to that restaurant and pay it forward one day. I am sure that I am not too far from you. Man, please let us know if any of you need anything at all.

Thank you. It’s heart breaking to say the least. The restaurant owner has a heart of gold. I picked up the check this morning & he just kept offering anything he could to help!

Hey man, I am sorry for the loss… that just sucks! Small towns are essentially one big family and I’m glad there was so much support for you! It’s a hard time.

I'm so sorry to hear about the tragedy. At the same time, I just love to hear stories about a community coming together to support one another. I try to do some of that with my neighbors. It's not always easy, as humans we get on each other's nerves, but when tragedy hits, people come together. It's a beautiful thing.
