Pro bodybuilder Rich Piana was placed into a medically induced coma this week after suffering a medical emergency at his Florida home, law enforcement sources tell TMZ Sports.

46-year-old Piana has competed and won several bodybuilding competitions over the years -- including Mr. California -- and has become an Instagram sensation, racking up more than 1 million followers.

Law enforcement sources tell us ... emergency personnel responded to a possible overdose call at Piana's home on Monday afternoon. When they arrived, Piana was unresponsive and was transported to a nearby hospital where he was placed into a medically induced coma.

Unclear how he's doing now. We're working on the story.

People hate on Rich all the time. Mainly because he was brutally honest about what he did. He abused the fuck out of steroids, he didn't always eat clean, and he was not shy about exposing the darker side of the bodybuilding industry. Was he on recs? Probably. I haven't seen a bodybuilder yet who wasn't or at least was at some point. Did he show bodybuilders in a negative light? No. They do that all by themselves. But lets face it, the body can only take so much. Ritch is pushing 50 and recently shot his weight up to well over 300 pounds. Idk if this had anything to do with his condition but it certainly didn't help.

All high level and most experienced athletes have enlarged hearts. Do you have evidence that his was unusually enlarged? Hypertrophy can be a sign of drug abuse too, but that's a tough one to use in an athlete.

Sure, the guy did abuse steroids, but again, it's more likely that recs got him. This was an overdose, not an acute MI (heart attack). Ischemia or endocarditis etc would be a good sign of heavy drug abuse to see if his heart was truly taking stress or some huge hypertrophy.

I am certainly not arguing that his steroid use might not have exacerbated his problems though. I am quite sure they did. Just stating that myocardial hypertrophy isn't as clear as a sign for steroid abuse

Updated news states it wasnt an OD, he fell and hit his head according to his girlfriend.....I doubt we will know much more due to privacy laws, everything seems to be rumor. His girlfriend wouldnt have access to his medical files at the hospital....

I was never a big fan, but I don't wish anything bad on anyone, sad to see things go that way for him.
