Copenhagen Police confiscated more than one tonne of steroids Thursday in what officials said was the biggest doping bust in Danish history.
“We have found so much that it is impossible to count it all up right now. But offhand I would say that it is the largest case of organized doping in Denmark thus far,” Commissioner Steffen Steffensen told Politiken.

Two suspected masterminds were arrested and were due to make a preliminary court appearance Friday morning.

The men, aged 40 and 25, were busted in a large police action that included the ransacking of at least seven addresses and a massive find of anabolic steroids in pill, capsule and powder form.

According to Politiken, the police operation was a direct result of a parliamentary decision last year to up the maximum penalty in doping cases from two to six years in prison. The stricter sentencing allows police to tap telephones, which Copenhagen Police said they used “for the first time” in the investigation that led to Thursday’s arrests.

“Before the new doping law, the police could do almost nothing because the investigation tools were so limited with the two-year maximum penalty. Now it is up to six years and we have therefore suddenly been given a new tool that we can use,” Steffensen told Politiken.

According to police, the two arrested men were running an illegal steroid operation that was selling the drugs in both open and private online chat groups.
