I'm living that reality brother. Somehow I'm about to be 58 it's mind boggling. I let myself get out of shape after a couple surgeries that I thought I could just get over and it isn't the case, recovering is a much bigger task that requires a lot of attention to detail. Then there's friends dying I mean after 3 decades in the military my friends are dropping like nobody's business. I've lost 30 friends since 2014.

My brain is still ready to go my body has issues LOL. I always thought I would be the really old guy doing crazy shit but the lack of cartilage is a problem I wasn't mentally prepared for and the torn things along with 14" of plates and 18 screws in a couple places. However all that being said I think being back here amongst the other lunatics is helping a ton. Nobody here is half stepping as far as I can see we're doing what we can supporting each other and that's invaluable. I miss moving giant weight I miss the ungodly pressure the burst capillaries and nose bleeds and being on a team or coaching but here we are at whatever stage we're at and still getting after it is in my opinion the best medicine.
Completely relate.

Go for a woman 10-20 years younger than you.
I'm 66, the GF is 48 and has a figure physique. When I'm out shopping I get a smile from women my age that are overweight and out of shape and I see in my mind through their clothes and think, man if there was anything that would kill what erectile function I have left, even a screaming hard on from an overdose of cialis and trimix that would send me to the ER, it would be seeing that naked. Like something out of a horror sci-fi movie. Would make Jabba the Hutt look attractive.

Alcohol and tobacco are helluva drugs...stack that with junk food diets and couch potato lifestyle and our friends from high school look like senior citizens. My last reunion at 25 years was a freak show. All the hot chick's I banged were long gone. I spent most of my time shaking my head wondering if I really stuck my dick in them all and rolling my eyes at all the half bald potbellied men around me. I looked 20 years younger. Steroids yea but shit 30 years of exercise good diet and supplements helped for sure plus a little just for men hair color and I am set.

Thanks fellas, I was good looking when I was young. All the years of abuse to my body have accumulated into a Frankenstein like appearance. Really, I don't care about that. Crooked nose and a misshapen eye all add character in my estimation.

It was just shocking to have that realization hit me that I got old as hell. I visited my folks this weekend. They are in their mid 80s and my mom is very frail with early dementia, my dad is better but he has stopped caring about his body and gained 20 lbs. He was always so fit and athletic.

I just hope that I can be functional and healthy when I am old. We work so hard for retirement only to be old and cannot enjoy it like when we were young. That's life.

I am just gonna keep fit, and attempt to maintain my body like a classic car. Drive it easy, lots of maintenance, but sometimes you got to blow the carbon out and rip on it to keep it running well. Do you think that some people go into conservation mode when they get old and just stop doing things to "save" their bodies from wear and tear? IMO that gets you old fast.

Do you think that some people go into conservation mode

I don't know if its conservation mode ,, or we get lazy or we just start to hibernate from life due to the damage we cause ourselves.

Humans are odd animals.

We as a species over all take zero care of our bodies for the most part for a great deal of our lives. I know myself even though I was involved with sports since 8th grade I've had my battles with pills n other drugs , booze , food , depression.

We put ourselves through that abuse for decades in some cases , it becomes instinct I think. An once it becomes instinctual or maybe habitual is a better word for it ,, but once we reach that stage of decline it becomes incredibly hard to change your ways , come about and right the ship.

I'm bored - look for instant gratification - I'm sad - look for instant gratification and so on. An we all know , no gratification that comes instantly lasts longer than a moment and you are looking again.

Eventually all that instant gratification causes people to lose ambition lose muscle lose energy , they sit all day and eat like shit ,, they start making old man noises and groans getting out of a chair. An not long after that , they get dropped in a pine box that's 2x7 and carried by 6.

We all know or we are "that guy" in our circle of family or friends. The guy people look at and say shit like ,,, you're a beast for your age ... holy shit old man ..... wow your grampy is so big .. haaahahah.

Father time can kiss our ass , cus we got shit to do.

We are different , we have goals. Whether it's chasing world records , adding to our totals , winning shows or rehab for a better pain free life ,,, that conservation mode , hibernating stuff ,, is best left for bears it's not for us.

I was having thoughts about the instant gratification the last couple of days and I'm trying to fix my focus on enjoying the journey again. I mean enjoying the pain like I used to although there will be no brain splitting pressures that I used to love. Embracing the grind each rep each set with the realization that it will add up that the changes are almost invisible along the way especially as early on in the comeback as I am. It's cathartic to have a group of brothers and sisters such as we have here who understand the grind and share whatever comes along that's noteworthy just like this thread. I greatly appreciate being back here and I'm embracing the journey far more then when I was attempting to do it alone.

We might bend ,, but we don't break WOOOOOO!!!

Love you all and what you bring to my life. Thank you for making it a better place.

I attended a funeral this weekend for my 29 yo cousin so I saw a lot of family & friends that I don’t see often.
Same story, hardly anyone got my age right & friends from high school that showed up looked rough! I’m not saying some of them didn’t still look decent but the majority went downhill quick! Some of the hot girls from back then are still hot but others make you question whether they were ever truly hot or not!

I feel your pain BMJ. Throw fitness into the equation and we are screwed (and not in the good way). My boy is in the OC and tells me how hot the chicks are our age which some have to be single. I am in the wrong part of the country.

Same boat here. I come across people I used to know when I was a teenager and so many of them look SO old. I don't feel like I look as old as they do and continuously have my age guessed much younger than my mid 40s, but damn I can't get over how much older some people look who are the same age as me.

I think it really all comes down to the lifestyle we all choose to live. Most of them don't work out regularly. At least their definition of working out regularly isn't the same as mine and most of them eat complete and utter garbage on a regular basis. I'm sure genetics plays its role, but epigenetics is important. So many people don't make smart lifestyle choices most of the time. I never really thought about it much when I was younger, but now that I'm getting older I can see the stark differences between making healthier choices and not.

Trying to date while living a bodybuilding and fitness lifestyle as I'm approaching middle age is a total nightmare. Especially in the times of camera filters, insane make-up and fake... well everything. Combine that with the poor diet and lifestyle choices most people fall into for convenience as they get older. I end up finding two different types of women. One who doesn't give any shits about her appearance, or health. That's gonna be a pass for me. The other who walks in looking like she just spent an hour at Home Depot painting her face on, eyelashes so damn long they poke my in the face as she sits down at the table with lips so puffy it looks like someone repeatedly punched her in the mouth over and over until her upper lip swelled up so big it now rests heavily on her bottom lip, of which it is shockingly the same size. Also, a hard pass.

Looks like single it is lol.
You will laugh but women who go to my church, a lot of the women in their 30s, 40s and 50s, look damn good. It's what use to be an old farm town so maybe has something to do with it. The ones I'm talking about look like they are in some sort of shape, whether its just working hard and eating good good or what I don't know. Genetics, working hard at something, working out, eating clean all count. I also think if your work is something you get satisfaction/personal reward from probably helps. In other words, having purpose helps.
