Nine people, eight men and one woman, were arrested September 1 in a large steroids raid by police in the greater Reykjavík area, according to Vísir. Police efforts were aimed at the import, sale, distribution and manufaturing of steroids. Large amounts of steroids were seized—mostly powder and tablets—as well as all sorts equipment intended for making steroids.
Police also seized cash, likely earned from such operation. House searches were conducted in several locations in the greater Reykjavík area, as well as one in Reykjanesbær.
Investigation has been underway for quite some time in cooperation with the director of customs. Most of the suspects, all of whom have been released, are in their thirties. Police have not released information regarding the amount of steroids seized, but, according to RÚV, it is believed to be substantial.
The raid was part of an international police operation, Operation Underground, led by Europol and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. Therefore, raids were simultaneously conducted in many countries and arrests made. The focus was on fighting the import of steroids from China, but China, police say, is known to produce steroids in large amounts, often under dubious circumstances, making the steroids all the more dangerous.
"Close cooperation with Iceland in particular resulted in financial investigations that traced back the financial flows to China." a statement from Europol reads.
