New Study Finds Hormone Replacement Therapy May Protect Against Alzheimer’s Disease

LifeXMD.com – Feb. 15, 2013 -- The study, published in the online Public Library of Science ONE journal, indicated that unusually rapid ageing might be associated with Alzheimer's in some women. The protection against Alzheimer’s provided by hormone replacement therapy (HRT) was seen in otherwise health women in menopause who carried a gene known to contribute to the development of Alzheimer’s. HRT appeared to slow down the accelerated aging compared to other women who did not receive HRT. When followed up 2 years later, those who did not receive HRT had effectively aged 5 times faster than those who did received HRT.

The study’s primary researcher, Professor Natalie Rasgon, from Stanford University said: "This shows that the gene (ApoE4) is contributing to ageing at the cellular level well before any outward symptoms of decline become apparent. Yet, estrogen appears to have a protective effect for middle-aged women who are carrying this genetic risk factor. Our findings from this study were first, that ApoE4 carriers are at greater risk of biological ageing, which is associated with negative health outcomes, and second, that if you were a post-menopausal ApoE4 carrier, being on estrogen HRT was a good thing. This brings us a step closer to being able to identify which women will benefit the most from HRT."

Dr Simon Ridley, of Alzheimer's Research UK, said, "We still need to know much more about the ApoE4 risk gene and this study has suggested important new clues about its possible effects. While it's not clear how the process of cell ageing might be linked to Alzheimer's, these results could eventually help scientists better understand the causes of the disease.”

Yes, Progesterone and it's metabolites / estrogen with the right dose, have been shown to help protect against Alzheimer’s. Natural bio-identical proges/estro is a must in women's hrt imo.

Key looks like timing and balance of both, as well as testosterone for women to .
