It seems like Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard has finally made up his mind about where he wants to play basketball next season and for the near future. According to ESPN.com, Howard told Magic general manager Rob Hennigan Friday that he wanted out of Orlando and wants to play for the Brooklyn Nets.

Howard still has one-year left on his deal and won’t become a free agent until next summer. No decision has been made about whether that request will be granted or not.

Kevin Garnett went from considering retirement to quickly re-signing with the Boston Celtics.

According to reports in The Boston Herald, Yahoo Sports, The Boston Globe, the 36-year-old Garnett has agreed to return to the Celtics on a three-year deal. He will make that official on July 11, when free agents can start signing with teams.

Yahoo’s Marc J. Spears reported the deal is for three years and $34 million. The average annual salary of that deal would equal just more than half the $21 million he made this season. The Herald, meanwhile, reported the two sides are working on a two-year deal that could include a third year.

Deron Williams and Jason Kidd will come as a package deal to either the Dallas Mavericks or Brooklyn Nets, ESPN’s Ric Bucher reported Saturday.

Bucher reported that Williams, he most coveted free agent on the market this offseason, will meet with both teams on Monday before deciding where to sign. Last Sunday, Williams narrowed down his choices to remaining with the Nets or signing with the Mavericks.

One source told Bucher that Williams and Kidd have already decided to sign with the Nets, but more sources tell him that Williams is still making up his mind. But most signs point to Williams re-signing with the Nets and Kidd joining him as the team’s backup point guard.

Forward Rashard Lewis, recently traded from the Washington Wizards to the New Orleans Hornets, was bought out Saturday, saving the Hornets millions in cap space.

Lewis will automatically become a free agent when it starts on July 1. Players can not signs deal until the 11th. New Orleans traded for Lewis before the NBA Draft, sending Trevor Ariza and Emeka Okafor to the Wizards.

Lewis, a two-time All-Star, signed a six-year, $118 million contract with the Orlando Magic in 2007 and his scoring average has gone down each of the past five seasons. He averaged 7.8 points in 28 games last season.

DALLAS (AP) -- Elton Brand thought he was going in for a harmless offseason workout at the Philadelphia 76ers' practice facility.
Instead, he got his walking papers.

Summoned to a meeting by team president Rod Thorn, Brand learned earlier this month the Sixers would use their one-time amnesty provision in the new CBA to let him go. The move means the $18.1 million Brand is owed in the final season of his five-year deal will not count against the salary cap for Philadelphia.

The two-time All-Star forward wouldn't stay unemployed for long.

The Dallas Mavericks won the bidding Friday to obtain Brand off waivers, the latest in a series of moves to build their roster after a frustrating start in free agency.

"I'm pretty happy with it," Brand said by phone Friday night. "I think it can be good for me."

HOUSTON (AP) -- A person with direct knowledge of the move says Knicks guard Jeremy Lin has signed an offer sheet with the Houston Rockets.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on Friday night on condition of anonymity because the move was not announced.

Another person familiar with the negotiations says it's a three-year deal worth about $25 million. The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the terms had not been announced, says the third year is worth about $15 million.

Lin is a restricted free agent and New York is expected to match Houston's offer within the required three days.

LAS VEGAS -- The Jeremy Lin era in New York may be over.

Despite the fact that the Knicks have been widely expected to match Houston's three-year, $25.1 million offer sheet for the restricted free agent point guard, they are nearing a sign-and-trade with Portland for free agent point guard Raymond Felton that appears to be threatening that stance. Felton's agent, Tony Dutt, confirmed that Felton is close to landing a multiyear deal to return to the place where he had his best season in 2010-11.

Sources confirmed the Knicks would receive Felton and veteran center Kurt Thomas while the Blazers land center Dan Gadzuric and forward Jared Jeffries. There was conflicting information on Felton's deal with the Knicks, though, as numerous reports indicated he would be paid a combined $10 million over three years while a source with knowledge of the deal insisted to SI.com that it was a four-year deal worth approximately $18 million
