See what I mean about people trying to defend what they like regardless of what is right in front of them? Baker has deadlifted over 700lbs in competition and at 6'5" walks around at a very lean 240. Not bad for a 55 year old non-bodybuilder.

OK, I deadlifted 800lbs, squatted 950 and benched 525 in a real powerlifting meet during my 27 year of real competition The 800 deadlift was a portion of the 14 World Records I set in my career. I did my best at almost 50 years old I opened up with 700. I retired from the sport in 2007 and I walk around at right now at 260lbs and 5%BF at 6'1", I am 10 years older than Baker is. Trust me, I see the pictures above. I would never want to look that bad. He is in awful shape for being 55 years old. My blood work will also make his look like he needs to be in critical care and mine is judged by a PRACTICING cardiologist at one of the best cardiac care hospitals in America. By the way, I did an incline bench yesterday on chest day at 315lbs for 6 reps after doing a set of 15, 12,10 and 8. Do you think Baker's imaginary lifts impress me? Seriously??? The guy looks sick to me, lean, no sick. I would offer him a sandwich but he won't eat it. Now tell us what you have accomplished Gunslinger? Anything but losing what, 43 lbs? Hard to deal with all of this false hero worship that is going on with you fad diet guys.. Hell....263 free testosterone? If that is what red meat will do to us I am not eating any more. Fuck that! 100 year old men average 360. 125 blood glucose, very high A`1C. No thanks I have seen what diabetes does to people as they age, nothing like going blind or losing a limb. This guy Baker is like the pied piper leading people to the early grave. Good luck to you.

Gunslinger, there are a whole lot of very serious accomplished guys here that have actually walked the walk in powerlifting and bodybuilding. This is why you have gotten such a backlash trying to come off as an expert. I have gained and lost more weight in my time as a real athlete that you will ever see, Never had to follow some fraud or fad diet to do it. You guys are like these damn wannabe crossfitters or the Zone dieters when they came out, flapping your gums about how you know best, the rest are idiots and have to continually shove you life choice down everyone's throats. Yet us idiots who are wring about everything are the ones actually walking the walk in real life while people like you create a façade.

Gunslinger....keep eating what ever you like but this discussion was about vitamins and minerals not this silly fad diet. I honestly wanted to see a good discussion of about this subject not being a part of kissing the ass of this hero you seem to worship. Go start your own threat about the Carnivor diet.

@Bigtex,

“ Now, I also just saw a picture of this guy. Honestly if I looked like he does I would literally panic. He is absolutely void of any muscle mass and quite frankly looks sick.”

LOL….. OK.
I wouldn’t be worrying much about poor little frail, sickly, rowing world record holder Shawn Baker. Going on 55, no trt, no peds.

TB, do you seriously think that impresses me? Seriously??? Is that really 455 he is kind of deadlifting? When I was his age I was doing arched back good mornings with 600lbs. I bench pressed more than he is lifting for 6 reps. Maybe if his free testosterone was not 263 he might be able to work with some respectable. OH, THAT RIGHT HE CLAIMS HE GOT IT UP TO ALMOST 400. WOW....just over what is average for a 100 year old man. Let me repeat myself for an ALMOST 55 year old guy he looks sick. Working hard? This guy doesn't have a clue what working hard is.

ST, I was told quite a while back by a wonderful lady (she worked at one of the health food stores that I would frequent for vitamins) to be sure and take powdered forms of vitamins and minerals if I needed supplementation....She claimed that capsules/solid (pill form) supplements, particularly, vitamins and minerals, would not be absorbed near what they should be...I think she told me the solids had anywhere from a 5% efficacy to maybe 25% depending on your ability to digest the solids...Do u know anything about this?...

I’ll just stick my finger in the blender here and say that I wouldn’t mind looking like him at 55. I wouldn’t mind having his abs right now at 36.

BigTex, I’m curious what 66 years old, 6’1” 260lbs at 5% bf looks like.

Well my wife seems to be pretty damn happy. ;) She met me when I was 308. I have been lucky all my life and always been thin and a very low body fat. Even at 308 I had fairly low body fat. The abs did get a little blurred at that point. Went to do blood work yesterday morning all the nurses came in because they had never seen veins in a man's arm like I have.

Now let’s talk about science even thought the carnivore zealots don’t believe in science. Is it eating only meat that contributes to good health or is it eating high fats? We know what high fat diets do because there is tons of research, but there is nothing on protein only diets. So we can't just make assumptions. Now, just a word on the high fat diets, even these guys admit eating vegies is a good thing as fat and protein can’t supply the much needed nutrients.

Volek JS, Phinney SD, Forsythe CE, Quann EE, Wood RJ, Puglisi MJ, Kraemer WJ, Bibus DM, Fernandez ML, Feinman RD. Carbohydrate restriction has a more favorable impact on the metabolic syndrome than a low fat diet. Lipids. 2009 Apr;44(4):297-309. doi: 10.1007/s11745-008-3274-2. Epub 2008 Dec 12. PMID: 19082851.

Abstract

We recently proposed that the biological markers improved by carbohydrate restriction were precisely those that define the metabolic syndrome (MetS), and that the common thread was regulation of insulin as a control element. We specifically tested the idea with a 12-week study comparing two hypocaloric diets (approximately 1,500 kcal): a carbohydrate-restricted diet (CRD) (%carbohydrate:fat:protein = 12:59:28) and a low-fat diet (LFD) (56:24:20) in 40 subjects with atherogenic dyslipidemia. Both interventions led to improvements in several metabolic markers, but subjects following the CRD had consistently reduced glucose (-12%) and insulin (-50%) concentrations, insulin sensitivity (-55%), weight loss (-10%), decreased adiposity (-14%), and more favorable triacylglycerol (TAG) (-51%), HDL-C (13%) and total cholesterol/HDL-C ratio (-14%) responses. In addition to these markers for MetS, the CRD subjects showed more favorable responses to alternative indicators of cardiovascular risk: postprandial lipemia (-47%), the Apo B/Apo A-1 ratio (-16%), and LDL particle distribution. Despite a threefold higher intake of dietary saturated fat during the CRD, saturated fatty acids in TAG and cholesteryl ester were significantly decreased, as was palmitoleic acid (16:1n-7), an endogenous marker of lipogenesis, compared to subjects consuming the LFD. Serum retinol binding protein 4 has been linked to insulin-resistant states, and only the CRD decreased this marker (-20%). The findings provide support for unifying the disparate markers of MetS and for the proposed intimate connection with dietary carbohydrate. The results support the use of dietary carbohydrate restriction as an effective approach to improve features of MetS and cardiovascular risk.

So two hypocaloric diets were compared:
  • Low carb (12% carb, 59% fat, 28% protein)
  • Low fat (56% carb; 24% fat, 20% protein.
Yet despite this considerably greater intake of saturated fat, the low-carb dieters reduced both their number of small, dense LDL cholesterol and their HDL/LDL ratio to a greater degree than those who ate a low-fat diet. In addition, triglycerides decreased by 51 percent in the low-carb group--compared with 19 percent in the low-fat group. Seems it was discovered that LDL is divided into 2 sub-fractions: small density LDL- B and large density LDL-A. Studies show that people whose LDL particles are predominantly small and dense, have a threefold greater risk of coronary heart disease. Furthermore, the large and fluffy type of LDL may be protective. Lipid EXPERT, Dr. Ron Krauss found that when people replace the carbohydrates in their diet with fat--saturated (SFA) or unsaturated (PUFAs) -- the number of small, dense LDL particles decreases. Small dense LDL particles permeate the endothelial cells and gain access to the wall of the artery where they cause damage leading to plaque. The large particles are not able to penetrate the cell wall and instead cause HLD levels to rise. Over a decade ago researchers reported that men with the highest number of small, dense LDL sub-fractions had four times the risk of developing clogged arteries than those with the fewest. Yet they found no such association for the large, fluffy particles. Further research has shown that by simply reducing the carbs in your diet (starches/sugar) you can decrease the LDL small particles and increase the LDL large particles. PROTEIN intake seems to have little to do with this as both diets had 28/20% protein.

According to author Jeff Volek, Ph.D., R.D., two factors influence the amount of fat coursing through your veins. The first, of course, is the amount of fat you eat. But the more important factor is less obvious. Turns out, your body makes fat from carbohydrates. It works like this: The carbs you eat (particularly starches and sugar) are absorbed into your bloodstream as sugar. As your carb intake rises, so does your blood sugar. This causes your body to release the hormone insulin. Insulin's job is to return your blood sugar to normal, but it also signals your body to store fat. As a result, your liver starts converting excess blood sugar to triglycerides, or fat.

Now to bodybuilders……..type II muscle fibers are very much glycogen dependent. Which is why most bodybuilders tailor their carb intake to before training and after. Only to have the glycogen stores for a hard workout and to replace the stores after training. Too much carbohydrate spills over and converts to triglyceride and also stores as fat. It is rare to find a competitive bodybuilder that goes zero carb, even the last two weeks.

In Volek's study the subjects on the low carb diet had a greater loss of fat in their blood. Which means their cholesterol levels dropped significantly. Restricting carbs keeps insulin levels low, which lowers your internal production of fat and allows more of the fat you do eat to be burned for energy. In the above study, subjects eating the low carb diet reduced cholesterol, triglycerides and lowered insulin.

Did you miss these two pictures at the bottom? That puts me around 51 and around 290. I have a totally different shape now. No more powerlifting.

Ok lets take your book from the top. I really don't care what you lifted. As for Shawn looking bad he is 55 and looks better than most of the 20 somethings at my local gyms. If that's what you wanna call bad whatever. I'd say he is in better shape than 90% of the men his age in america. Likely better than most on here. I also don't know any 100 year olds with 360 test levels. Most of the guys I know in their late 30's - early 40s have test in the 340-400 range, myself included. What have I accomplished? I'm a brown belt in BJJ and can put you to sleep inside of 30 seconds if I need to. I run my own school, have a nice little family and teach people how to fight with and without weapons. Also I lost 46 pounds in just over 3 months while getting stronger. I have lost as much as 71 pounds in 9 months. I don't suffer from hero worship. But you seem to suffer from a bad case of ego. This "baker guy" isn't leading anyone to an early grave. You have your opinions and I can quickly tell you where you can stick those.

I've also gained and lost hundreds of pounds over the years. I have tried pretty much every diet, supplement and many PEDs. I have NEVER claimed to be an "expert" in anything. I have said dozens of times this is simply what has worked for me and many people I know. But you don't like it and you turn into a whiny little bitch over it. I don't have a facade. I'm the same person in person as I am on here and I'll tell you to take your inflated ego and fuck yourself with it in person. (feel free to test that)

I will keep eating what I like. Thanks for your concern. You didn't wanna seen a good discussion about this. You wanted to post some long winded shit to try and make you seem more important than you actually are or impress new guys who might read it.

It's fun to talk about ourselves isn't it? At my age I have a whole lot of life experiences to talk about. Gunslinger, thank for letting us know what you can do. Gunslinger, let me give you some advice on teaching people how to fight and use weapons. I learned this rather quickly working in night clubs around some very dangerous people. So I do have quite a lot of experience in that aspect as well, the military trained me pretty well and I spent most of my life in martial arts including 10 pro fights the PKA. Fight with my hands or weapons.....I now carry a 40 caliber every where I go and most people here do the same since constitutional carry is in full effect. I learned a long time ago that a sword is no match for hand gun. But back to your fighting skills........one night at a bar my karate instructor owned there was a problem with two guys. My boss had provided me a black belt in taekwondo to work as my bouncer. We escorted the two guys out the front door after a problem and then both of them started jumping around acting like Bruce Lee. The black belt ran back inside and left me by myself. Yea, fear really changes us. I was the only one left standing after about 20 seconds. Didn't even mess up my suit. Moral to this story, most of the time real life is much more difficult than most imagine. Ego inflated is something you can afford when you have earned it. Yours is very inflated and you have not earned anything.

Now I will add one more thing to this........let me introduce you to a man my wife and I have known for 26 years. He was 75 years old n the below picture and is 79 today. This is what MEN look like when they spend a life time of taking care of themselves and eating properly. Do you know who he is? He a pretty famous guy in the bodybuilding world. He's got pretty good abs but at least can say he has walked the walk.

Noooo......that is Clint Eastwood. But I do have hollow points in my 40 with a back up magazine. My wife carries the same thing and is a damn fast accurate shot.

Yep, I've worked security at clubs and I was LE for a while. All that good stuff. I'm sure the military taught you all kinds of super deadly stuff...lol I've got plenty of friends who are or where in all branches of the military and I can say without a doubt you don't know shit. And I always carry a Glock 48 and 43 me. Was SWAT for almost 4 years and received a hell of a lot more and better training than anyone you know. (I could start name dropping but I'm above that and don't need to stroke my ego) People here who have known me for a few years already know all this. BLAH BLAH BLAH. You asked me what I've done, I told you. But YOU are the one obsessed with talking about yourself. I Don't give a shit how much you have lifted or how many famous friends you have. I could start name dropping too. The bottom line is you don't know everything and you don't like the idea that what me and testbonner have said...you cannot disprove. It pisses you off and makes you feel less important so you have to go on a huge rant about all the cool shit you have done and famous people you know...lol its kinda funny really and kinda sad at the same time.

You don't know me bud. You don't know what I've earned and frankly it's none of your business. Your shit talk doesn't do anything for your argument and worse it makes you look like a fragile bitch who has to have his poor little ego stroked. You don't impress me. You don't impress anyone with enough common sense to see through your BS. Everyone who has been on the boards for a while have seen people like you.

You don't have a good argument against what we have said so you attacked Dr. Baker personally going after his character. You did the same with me. Once you started that you lost. Period. Deal with it. Eat how you want to eat and keep making long winded posts on here to stroke your ego and maybe impress some new guys who don't know people like you are a dime a dozen.
