Okay you lead head, I need some info. I'm considering a laser sight on my Ruger SR9 c. It's a short rail but I think I won't have a problem.

Since this is aftermarket, I need to know how viable of an option it is and how feasible it would be in a real world situation. I don't need to be entering my social security number while some dude's bearing down on me.

Too much trouble? Just start throwing lead?

Will the addition be too bulky? Getting in the way of a draw?

Still good for concealed carry?

Battery life?

An NRA guy told me, you don't take your gun out as a deterrent, you take it out with all intent to stop an aggressor. That said, if ever needed, I'm not waving it around like some gang banger.

3 things to to remember if you ever have to use your gun for self defense.
1: I neutralized the threat
2: I feared for my life
3: I want my lawyer

As far as the laser goes I just purchased the old version of the Smith & Wesson Bodyguard. I had ZERO interest in getting one with the laser. Remember KISS, one less thing to think about. Practically none of my carry guns even have a safety. The Bodyguard has one but tbh if it’s in a holder the safety is never on. Just one man’s opinion.

Laser? No. Flash like, yes, Red Dot, well ok. Front sight, trigger press, the best. Buy Holosun, cheap good and great warranty. Home defense. Kel Tec KSG 25... .You don't want anything leaving the barrel at 1,125 in a house. Nothing beats a shot gun for home defense..

Laser on carry I dont get the point.
How will you actually use it during a situation?

No laser for me. They are cool looking in the movies. If you were to get into a gun fight and there is smoke in the air, you will have an arrow pointing right to your center mass coming from your pistol as you attempt to use it to acquire target rather than pointing down the pistol. If you actuate it off and on as needed it is another thing for your brain to be doing and taking away mental bandwidth as you fight. All your brain power should be used to 1. not get killed 2. Neutralize the threat.

I do have the laser on mine.
You can read and watch videos for days on the advantages and disadvantages.
I think it’s personal preference and if shit hit the fan probably not even needed.

I was a competitive shooter for a very long time. Mostly GFFS and IDPA here in US and others in Norway.
The laser is pretty much useless for civilian self defense. There are not many scenarios where you get to draw turn on laser and actually use it.
Its just another device that you really need to train to use and most people does not even train at all.

Just like adding a red dot you need to train with that too. Using a gun on a range is one thing, using a gun when shit hits the fan and your adrenaline is pumping can be overwhelming.
The more you have to do during those situations the less chance of getting it right. its not like the movies where you see they point their laser on a guy and he sees it so he stops.
We pretty much have to draw and fire, its not much time between drawing and firing and the bad guy will be in action too. I just dont see how the laser adds anything to the split second between the draw and action.

rail mounted lasers are poor imo. Id go for a holoson 507 C. I like green over red.

I think you're confirming what I already had thought.

I do shoot my gun here and there but under a stressful condition, no one really knows how it would go down until they end up in that situation; hopefully never.

Exactly! Through six combat deployments I have observed some of the best "shooters" miss the broadside of a barn. Until someone is shooting back at you, you never know how you will react.

Bro, find a place near you with force on force sim training. I went through their course and I am WAYYYYYYY better. Also the first time you get hit with a simunition it raises stress levels a lot because it HURTS! I wore regular jeans and a short sleeve t-shirt for my first go. All the other guys were in starched carhartt pants and long sleeve shirts some even had padded clothing. I had welts that took well over a month to heal. I think it was good for me though. Anyway, knowing the extent of the pain made me FAR more adverse to getting shot. I did learn and got way better even if I looked like I had the measles.

My place closed in covid so I do not have a school to go now but lots of opportunities out there and if you carry, I would recommend it. Hell, it's only your life.

My 2cc’s is from 23 plus years of downrange, point of the spear activity.
I recently was informed that “reading and listening to” blah blah far outweighs any actual life experience so I am tempted to just keep quiet
Lasers and lights shoot both ways, light discipline is mandatory if you and your boys (loved ones) are going to get home.
We used lights and lasers during my entire SOCOM World Tour days, pressure pad and or grip activated AFTER initializing power to them.
Target determines tactics.
Wife and I have rail mounted TLR2Hl’s mounted on Glock 19 gen 3’s
Great for nightly walks and bedside table.
Splash the laser around a corner or plant it on the upper torso and open fire, spread the trauma around a bit to lessen the likelyhood of survival
Does not interfere with draw speed etc with a Fobus thumb break holster.
Buy a good one, not a cheapie.
I ran an old school lasermax guide rod laser back in the 90’s and early 2000’s it was okay.
Blah blah sorry for rant
