Just had an MRI of my hip that's been giving me some pain. There's nothing torn but it seems I have developed a bone spur on the outer socket of the hip and is causing an impingement with the femoral head.

Here's where I need some advice. Ortho said he would not remove the spur because it will only return. Wasn't happy to hear that. He offered an intra-articular hip injection that MAY reduce the swelling and pain. According to him, some people get no relief, some say it got worse but most say it helped for 6 months.

I'd like a fix here, not pain management. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Sounds like a gamble vs. another gamble: bone spur may or may not return after surgical removal vs. a less invasive injection may or may not give you 6 months relief.

The odds of the bone spur not returning may improve if you intend to give up the gym lifestyle you've loved, but choosing injections over surgery (and recovery) might have you continuing that lifestyle while observing hip injection cycles that may provide diminishing effectiveness over time.

I like LG's doc-shopping advice ... I love checking with more than just a second doctor, but I wonder how many other opinions insurance is willing to pay for.

It seems inj. may just post pone the inevitable so maybe you should consider having the spur removed and see what happens. Hopefully it works cause once you have a hip replacement done your squatting days are over, you'll have a big gash (scar) in your hip, and your ass will look like you turned 90 over nite. How do I know all this ? I've had both sides done and as soon as I save up the money I'm getting plastic surgery on my gross ass ass!

I have bone spurs in both hips. Same thing. Got the shot in 1 and it helped until I started training again. no long term benefit for me.

The doc gave me PT for 6 weeks. I did not want to pay for 6 weeks but went for 2 weeks and I now do some the PT they asked me to do every day. That was 15 years ago and I must say that I always feel it but it is WAY better than it was. PT certainly does not give quick relief but after 4-5 months i was playing soccer with my niece and noticed that I was not in any real pain, yeah I was a bit sore a few days but it definitely helped.

This is a good place to start. You will feel certain exercises. Those are the ones that I stuck with. I find new stuff all the time. Big one is one legged glute bridge. I did not see how it would help but it did for me.

Thank you brother. Yeah I'm not paying some dude to show me what I can learn on my own, plus get $300 an hr from the insurance co. and a $60 co-pay from me.

I'm going to give a few of those movements a try for several weeks. One take-away from that video, over stretching. I may be guilty of that one so I'm taking a week or 2 off from stretching and see if it settles down.

Yeah, I stretch 2x a day but only 2 minutes MAX for each muscle broken into 30 second intervals. Also stretch at 80%, don't push it. Has made a huge diff for me. hat and the PT. Basically any PT for hip arthritis is good for bone spurs I have found. Just have to figure out which are tops.
