I admit to being fairly ignorant of insulin protocols. I think I understand conceptually the purpose of the humalog (short acting) insulin and the lantus (long acting) insulin. The intermediate insulin is what makes me scratch my head a bit.
I feel "safer" with ingesting some carbs pre-workout, taking the humalog, ingesting more carbs intra-workout, and then having a post workout shake with protein/carbs. With carbs surrounding the insulin injection and filling almost the entirety of the shuttling window, I feel like the chances of an issue is fairly small.
With lantus, it's my understanding that you can take 15IUs without carbs and not need to worry about going hypo.
With the humalin-R, it can hit you pretty fast (almost as fast as humalog if injected IM), but the shuttling window seems to be a couple of hours longer. In my ignorance, I'd rather not have to worry about carbs for that longer period of time, and more importantly, not be as worried about ingesting any healthy fats in the afternoon/evening (if injecting in the morning). Am I misunderstanding?
