For the past 5+ yrs +/- I have had high RBC, recently 6.28M/ul, 4.5-6 normal range. About 3 yrs ago I started having low iron issues with this which seems pretty weird considering. I had iron infusions about 3 yrs ago and it fixed the issue until recent blood test showed Iron 37ug/fl, 50-175 normal, Iron % sat 7%, 11-46% normal, TIBC 545ug/dl, 250-400 normal, ferritin 21.4 ng/ml, 30-335 normal. All other readings were normal except for hdl/ldl which I recently got put on a statin.
Anyone have experience with high RBC and low iron ??

Yes.
You're probably making a sh*tload of RBC's, but they're not properly "sized/shaped" because of your low iron. A potential "fix" for you would be to donate double RBC's and/or have your endo. write you a prescription for double RBC phlebotomy while at the same time start supplementing with iron pills. Hope that makes sense???

If you are going to take 'iron pills' buy a engine block and break off pieces and eat them. If you want to increase your blood (available usable iron) iron. Eat your dark leafy greens!

Heme iron is the iron you're seeking!

  • 3 ounces of beef or chicken liver
  • 3 ounces of clams or mussels
  • 3 ounces of oysters

Good sources of heme iron, with 2.1 milligrams or more per serving, include:

  • 3 ounces of cooked beef
  • 3 ounces of canned sardines, canned in oil

Other sources of heme iron, with 0.6 milligrams or more per serving, include:

  • 3 ounces of chicken
  • 3 ounces of cooked turkey
  • 3 ounces of ham
  • 3 ounces of veal

Other sources of heme iron, with 0.3 milligrams or more per serving, include:

  • 3 ounces of halibut, haddock, perch, salmon, or tuna
