I really like doing deads with a hex bar (or trap bar). Always have. I realize they hit slightly different parts of the body. Straight bar is mainly hams and lower back and the hex is quad predominant. What I really like is being able to center the bar with my body. I started doing them again back in April, and I'm about to get back into the numbers I was hitting 10 years ago. I realize it's not a power lifter movement, but I've never been a power lifter.

Does anyone else prefer dead with a hex bar?

I use them exclusively with esp older clients and pretty much everyone else that is not competitive and just wants to pick up heavy shit. Less potential for lower back issues or a hamstring tear in older clients. I have 3 bars with handle heights 4", 6" and the Rogue 8" for taller clients and also fits in a cage so you can do partials and heavy trap work with it.

Been in+out of Gyms since there were just "machines" vs "free weights," but it's good to see free weights options increasing over the years.

Haven't bought or used a Hex Bar yet, but I do have a SSB for squats and a Swiss Bar for benches out in the garage ... only way I can keep going. My shoulders are gimpier than my spine (so far), hence my choices, but a Hex Bar is probably next.

I love the trap bar. If I am going to deadlift, it will be only with the trap bar. I am with you, I prefer being centered in the bar/ load. I do not like how straight bar deads make my low back feel in the bottom position.

If you stand with a more erect posture, it definitely hits the quads. If you are leaning forward slightly, with your hands starting in front of you at the beginning of the pull it hits the lats hard.

I used to have that problem if I got my hips too low , now I get my air n brace and sort of RDL down to the bar n hook up , then its on like donkey kong , for me it's way less issues.

Never got to play with a hex or trap bar , I lift at home , there are all kinds of toys I want to try one day if i ever get to a big city gym.

The only way to deadlift if you want to minimize injury risk. My gym has two different kinds and I love em. Only problem is the length of collars only let me get 5 plates per side.

Brother I helped a guy with his deadlift form last fall who was dropping his hips too low, because that is what he was told to do. I told him, that is correct if it fits your body type and mobility. I set him up nearly in an RDL and in a few months he went from failing at 485 lbs to hitting triples with 585 lbs. Deadlift how your body tells you too.

I hear you. I had 5 plates on them yesterday but the one I was using had space for a 6th plate.

Right on man !!!

This proves that you can watch video's from your favorite lifters ,, but you aren't them. I can watch Louie pull , I can watch Jamal Browner or Tamara Walcott but I have to pull like I pull ,, not like they do. I can take pieces of what they do and adapt and over come issues I have but in the end ,, I have to pull like I do ,, not be an imitation.
