Hernia belts

Anyone ever use a hernia belt for deads and squats? I had an inguinal mesh repair about 12 years ago and am starting to have slight discomfort in that area. I was thinking about some preventive measures.

Do they help and which one would you recommend?

Is this your first one? I had the umbilical done at the same time as the inguinal. My recovery time wasn’t too long.

Yessir. I’ve had it for about 10 years, but in the last year, it’s pretty painful when I deadlift or squat. Sometimes it even bothers me if I’m extra bloated after a couple boats of sushi.

Doesn’t stick out too too far, but it gets stuck out sometimes and has to be manipulated back in. Letting the VA do it. Robot, human-assisted.

Glad to hear that it went so well for you bud.

Yeah I’d say it’s better to have a short term setback and then get back without the problem.

i had it done a few years ago....i must have torn it deadlifting and waited a few years to get it fixed.

it would pop out the belly button after eating a lot and i just got sick of it and can be deadly if strangulated as i am sure you know.

yes it was a robotic surgery and was the best decision ever and healed nicely.

worst part is getting put under and the 3 incision marks from the laparoscopic surgery and just the immobility after the surgery.......was just painful to move around for a day or two.

I am not sure about a lifting belt since i dont use 1 but would probably help

I don't know anyone, but recently tweaked by back doing 500 lbs deficit RDLs without a belt (Yep, I am still a dumbfuck at 47). My daughter has one of those soft belts the strongman/strongwoman use. Man, that think is awesome. It has so many adjustable features. There are adjustment straps all over that you can cinch up tight as shit. Almost like having a heavy belt on without the restriction. I am going to buy one for myself when I find the right one.

The recovery time for mesh inguinal hernia repair depends on the type of surgery and individual healing, but here’s a general guideline:

1. Laparoscopic (Minimally Invasive) Repair:
  • Return to light activities: 1–2 weeks
  • Return to work (desk job): 1–2 weeks
  • Return to strenuous activity or heavy lifting: 4–6 weeks
  • Full recovery: 4–6 weeks (sometimes sooner)
2. Open Mesh Repair (Lichtenstein technique):
  • Return to light activities: 1–2 weeks
  • Return to work (desk job): 2–3 weeks
  • Return to strenuous activity or heavy lifting: 6–8 weeks
  • Full recovery: 6–8 weeks

Factors that Affect Recovery:
  • Age and overall health
  • Whether the hernia was large or recurrent
  • Complications (e.g., infection, pain)
  • Physical demands of your job

Tips for Better Recovery:
  • Follow lifting restrictions carefully
  • Walk daily to promote circulation
  • Avoid strenuous activities until cleared
  • Watch for signs of infection or complications

For an umbilical hernia repair with mesh, recovery is generally quicker than with inguinal hernia repair, especially for smaller hernias. Here’s what you can typically expect:

Recovery Timeline:

1. Laparoscopic Umbilical Hernia Repair:
  • Light activity: 1–2 days
  • Return to work (desk job): 1 week
  • Strenuous activity/heavy lifting: 3–4 weeks
  • Full recovery: 3–4 weeks

2. Open Umbilical Hernia Repair with Mesh:
  • Light activity: 3–5 days
  • Return to work: 1–2 weeks (if non-physical)
  • Heavy lifting/strenuous work: 4–6 weeks
  • Full recovery: 4–6 weeks

Things to Watch For:
  • Swelling or redness around the incision
  • Fever or chills
  • Severe or worsening pain
  • Signs of mesh rejection or infection
Tips for Smooth Recovery:

  • Avoid lifting anything over 10–15 pounds early on
  • Walk often, but avoid straining
  • Keep the incision clean and dry
  • Follow your surgeon’s aftercare plan closely
In most cases, umbilical hernia repair is a routine and successful procedure with relatively fast healing, especially when no complications arise.

I had the open umbilical done with mesh, no issues, just a small scar that faded with time. And we know chicks dig scars anyway. I had the surgery on a Thursday or Friday and back to work on Monday. I took a while to get back to the gym as I had a SLAP repair about 1.5 months before on my left shoulder. I cannot comment on a belt for squats as I already had my left quad tendon tear and could no longer squat. I really just need to be wrapped in bubble wrap and take up a raging game of checkers or chess (and as I type this I'm 5 weeks post op from my 4th left shoulder surgery..)

laughing at you ... in your bubble wrap :D. How is it that your left shoulder has required 4 surgeries?
