Obviously lifting and holding heavy weights builds grip strength however I'm looking for something to do while at my desk, on the couch, etc.. I had a progressive set like 25 years ago but I'm sure they've gotten better since then..

Anyone use one of these? Style preference? Brand?

Captains of crush are pretty much the standard. I bought one can’t remember exactly the poundage, to help rehab my grip after breaking both bones in my forearm in 2020 Most of the work is accomplished by plate pinches, towel pull ups and bar hangs but it’s nice to have a quantifiable tool. I used it to balance right and left.

I'm looking at a couple sets on Amazon that have a range of resistance. 50/100/150/200/250 not sure how if the 50 is going to be so easy it's a waste or if the 250 is going to be impossible. I guess I've wasted 50 bucks on worse and they are returnable, I just hate the time wasted trying to find stuff worth buying

Iron Mind has a whole range of quality products related to building grip and hand strength.

Check out their sections on the left for IronMind Grippers, IronMind Grip Tools and Grip Training Sport Specific. I prefer Iron Mind over the others. They seem to take their work seriously and their products are geared towards power lifting and strongman training so you know it's built well.

What I have found. Most average guys it’s a 50-50 chance they get the #1
You would be surprised how weak most people grip is.

I can do the #2 and working on the 2.5
Not many average people can do the 2 or above.

If you can close a 3 your a bad ass. I think you get certified. Rumor is if you can close a 3 you can crush a potato

the #4 I think only two-three people in the world have done.

Yes, COC is the gold standard. And as Raj said, just grab the 1/2/2.5 and you’ll be good. The 3 is insanely difficult for me to close and I can only do it if I get it perfectly set in my hand and I’m fresh as a daisy, and it even then, it’s just for that split second and it’s merely a max out, not a working set. I do all my working sets with the 2 and 2.5, and I have MASSIVE hands.

For you guys working hands a lot, are you only working crushing strength or do you incorporate extensor work in as well?

I do. I bought one of those band sets off Amazon. They only cost like $10, so I figured I would give them a try. They work really well.

Well I’m a competitive arm wrestler so I work every muscle and angle and pressure you can imagine. The best I’ve found for all around extensor work is the good ole fashioned rice bucket.
5 gal bucket, 10 pounds or so of basic uncooked rice, and just dig around, opening, closing, pronating, supinating, etc etc etc. Absolutely exhausting in no time at all.
