She’s under age and has autism...so...
And she's an authority on how the world should operate.... At 16 you don't know jack about anything, We shouldn't even know the name of ANY Swedish children, let alone run our countries off their advice :]

"The academia" just cares where its next grant is coming from and who it has to schmooze to get it, which is generally politicians and government. They are not even close to politically unbiased or independent. Its why so much of academia are liberal and vote Democrat (or Socialist and Communist).

So corporate steering is bad? But political steering is good? Seems hypocritical.

We have different definitions of “academia”...who they are and what they do.

I believe, please correct me if I’m wrong, that you’re referring to the people who run things like universities and research projects and other think tank type ventures, as the academia. They would be the ones swayed by politicians and money and influence and power.

When I say “academia”, I’m referring to the scientists that collect the data, interpret the data, and then submit said data without sway. My (best) professors from 15 years ago, and my (best) professors from the past 3 years at a prestigious local private university that I was lucky to get into and only did because of my veteran status, were not popular on campus. They swam against the stream if need be because truth is all that matters. Not money or title or tenure. The true academia is the collective voice of intelligent minds who are not influenced by anything but truth and proof. There is a middle ground to all of this, to almost anything. We just have to be willing.

The planet is over populated. Mother Nature gives us plagues and viruses and we keep fucking her off.

No it's not.

By what metric do you claim that? We already produce enough food globally to feed 10 billion people. Hunger is a political problem, not a sustainability problem. https://www.huffpost.com/entry/world-hunger_b_1463429 (and HuffPost is not exactly a conservative rag)

Maybe we are supposed to be warming up. Just because a bunch of people scream that it's bad and how dare you, does not make it so.

I've never gotten a straight answer to the simple question of: "What is supposed to be the correct global average temperature?"

Just using made up number. Let's assume that the global average temperature is presently 70F, and let's assume climate change is causing an increase in the global average temperature of 0.5F over the next 50 years. If the "correct" global average temperature is supposed to be 71F, then the climate change is a good thing. If the "correct" global average temperature is supposed to be 69F, then the climate change is a bad thing.

So what do the "experts" say the correct global average temperature is supposed to be? You'll never get an answer. Because it's not about the temperature. Any increase of temperature or decrease in temperature comes with its own benefits and detriments. An increase in temperature increases agricultural yield, for example, but has other negatives. What "climate change" is all about is scaring people into surrendering their liberties to global institutions that will "manage" (control) how we live. That is, what you eat, whether and what you drive, etc. etc.

If there is anything that this pandemic has taught me is that people are pretty easy to scare, and once frightened they seem very willing to surrender their liberties to a gov't that claims to have experts that know what they're doing. The pandemic has also taught me that while gov't experts know more than me, they don't know enough of these complex systems to be able to manage the world. So the experts don't know enough to help us, but they know enough to think they do, and to screw us all over big time.

Yes, professors and grad students, etc doing research, at universities and colleges. Most won't buck the system that gets them tenure, their mansions, cars, country club memberships, vacation homes, etc, through public and corporate grants. Its nice that some will go against the grain for the science even when its a detriment to themselves (neo-Galileo's).

Scary to read some of this.

@matthewk04 You pretty much get it.

@NavyChief Give me one good way of disposing of the waste from nuclear plants (half life of ~forever).

@DungeonDweller The VAST majority of the scientific community outside the reach of corporate steering, the academia, understand that we have too many people that are doing too many things that influence the world around us negatively. Not just warming, but plastic pollution, over farming, mass deforestation of rainforests and other natural habitats that this earth needs. Y’all think the whole world should be concrete and metal and people?

Some of y’all are smarter than this.

The plastic pollution is terrifying. Plastic is in the stomach of every animal in the world down to the deepest depths of the ocean. Read a great piece today on the single use plastics industry and how they’ve managed to get us to blame ourselves for their terrible choices.

I do agree that this is bullshit and needs fixed.
I wish more people would take care of the waters of all sorts, that we use. Oceans, lakes rivers and creeks.

Every time my lady and I go to the nude beach, we fill up a bag full of garbage on short walks. Picture included (of her) in order to cool down the discussion, pun intended.

Rain forest dwindling away, where is this happening because of increased warmth?
Brazil Forest are being cut down by man made saws, not climate change.

Sorry, NC...I should have stated that better...Honestly, I was trying to fun ya a little...What I meant in a shallow way, was that if u don't have forest (pliable ground/fertile) then the warmth won't do any good...Nothing will grow anyway...

What actually prompted me to post that, was a few years ago I looked at some satellite images of the rainforest from around the beginning of satellite imaging, and then years later and could see a significant amount of difference in the landscape...It was shocking to say the least....Anyway, my bad for not clarifying that...

BTW, I posted this thread to get an education, not give one, *LOL*...U guys have posted some really good info, including u...

I am on the fence with "climate change"...I can see the point of it not being man made...I still tho , am not clear on how we can be absolute on it, yet...;).....Also, I was curious to see what u all thought about Greta being so young.....
