I like to do the garage workouts and then go to the commercial gyms ...so its a great balance.

i can do the weird shit in the garage or outside and still get to see the tits and ass in the gym
I raised four young men and I always told them, don't worry about the T&A in the gym. You do the work in the gym and you can have all the ass you want when you get out.

I don't have very much big commercial gym experience , first gym was in Clifton NJ , just a small box full of monsters , maybe 30 x 50 in the back of a strip mall , think it was part of a warehouse.

Then later when I got into field events and football we trained at one of the larger high schools fields and at Bowdoin College , that was a cool gym. Trained there when I was still throwing hammer n shot in the 80's just before The Athletic Congress merged and became USA Track n Field.

We went to Golds a few times I hated it.

Im a garage , basement , warehouse kind of guy.

Does anyone work in anymore? We would strip the plates so someone could start to warm up and have 3-5 guys in the squat rack.
Not really. I have even invited some to join me for the entire workout. They all turn me down.

Going back to a commercial gym for the first time in about 9 year after working out in a home gym makes me realize what I forgot: people are truly enamored with the cable machines! Thankfully it leaves all the racks and benches freed up! I went back mainly due to boredom and my workouts have been a 9 compared to recent 4-6’s.
It’s amazing what going does for your workouts and gains. I’m going back to a commercial one in November. Miss it to much

Things were different back before we went "mainstream," back when we were only a "sub-culture."

AH-nold and "Sly" recognized that, but they went and fucked it up for the rest of us.

(first gym was the sweat-scented Elizabeth, NJ YMCA)

The home gym is nice and I still use it in my day off. My wife uses it in the mornings.

Commercial gyms seem like different breed these days. I miss the gym atmosphere of the 80s and 90s. It just felt like we were all there for the same reason and less mean mugging going on. I have a couple gym memberships and enjoy some locations more than others. I think a lot depends on the area and clientele. If you get stuck in a gym with the tripod crew, it can be quite miserable. There's one location near my work and it seems like everyone in there has a damn tripod with their phone on it filming their entire workout. It's ridiculous. I mean, I get filming a set and reviewing your form and such, but most of these people are just making a production of it.

There's a location near my house (same gym chain) and everyone is much more serious and much more friendly. I've worked in with a lot of different people when we end up on the same equipment. Always someone in there willing to spot you if you need it. Forget asking one of the tripod crew to work in. That ruins their whole damn video apparently lol.

Of course there are different standards to commercial gyms as well. Technically, Powerhouse would still be considered a commercial gym, but they are not the same as 24/7, Anytime Fitness, LA Fitness, etc... Powerhouse owners are not subject to the typical franchise requirements of rules, equipment, marketing, fees, etc... I have not found a Powerhouse yet that was not an awesome place to train.

Dude, that's a beautiful home gym. Much respect!!

I like going to my local gym. It used to be a Powerhouse gym, and I think they stopped paying the license fees, but still has good equipment, etc. It has great lighting... LOL I always look twice as big and ripped there than I do at home. Yeah, I'm vain. I usually train between 7:30-9:30am so the truly big guys aren't there, just us retirees and stay-at-home moms.

Now that it's summer, I've been seeing HS and college age boys working out. I know it's stupid, but I can't fully explain just how much satisfaction I get lifting about half the weight these kids are "trying" to throw around while being 3X their size. If they learn just one thing this summer, maybe it's that slow, controlled movement and squeezing at peak contraction stimulates the muscle a whole lot more than whatever it is that they're doing.
