Going back to a commercial gym for the first time in about 9 year after working out in a home gym makes me realize what I forgot: people are truly enamored with the cable machines! Thankfully it leaves all the racks and benches freed up! I went back mainly due to boredom and my workouts have been a 9 compared to recent 4-6’s.

Doing the same ... black iron garage gym since covid closed a few some yrs back, but summers are a bitch in my garage.

Normal citizens suck in commercial gyms, but their phones suck more than which equipment they use imo.

good luck.

The good thing is that the gym is only about a half a mile from my work, and I’m the boss so I can go whenever is the best time. There’s usually only 2 to 5 people there when I go.

Sometimes a change can breathe new life into a person. I hope it goes as planned. Sounds good that you can go off peak too.

I have not been in a commercial gym in decades and I'm not sure I could handle it. I'm not waiting to use the cable cross over machine. lol

It really sucks in those commercial gyms that only have one cable crossover or one smith machine. When I train, I call it retiree time, there is almost no one in the gym, except a few old ladies. When I walk over and ask them how many sets they have left, that was always there last one. Haha. I guess I intimidate them or they think I need it more than them.

I try and schedule most of my clients between 9 am and 2 pm for this reason. Every once in a while, I get a client who can only workout out at 5-7 pm, peak hours. I always explain, how crowded it is and how they may end up sitting around waiting for a piece of equipment for a while. They pay me for 60 minutes and if they don't mind wasting 10-15 minutes sitting around waiting then more power to them.

Does anyone work in anymore? We would strip the plates so someone could start to warm up and have 3-5 guys in the squat rack.

That would require far too much human interaction, something that is foreign to many these days. The only thing they want to interact with is social media.

I remember that work-in phrase. As long as you kept it within reason and didn't want your 135 inserted when the 405, 495, 585 guys were already in place, everybody was cool.

We used to save time by not consulting our phones in the gym.

No, unheard of. The other day I was doing seated inc. db curls, starting out light and working my way up. I always grab 1 set, use it and put it back on the rack for others to use. This tard next to me had like 4 sets of db all around his bench. It was like I would set a pair back on the rack and he would grab them and put them in 'his pile'. Finally I told him that he obviously didn't have a clue what gym etiquette is. 'What do you mean'? I said 'have you noticed that I put the set Im using back on the rack so others can use'. Him- 'well that's not how I do it'. Me- 'like I said, you have no gym etiquette'. 'When your done with your set rack it for someone else, who is waiting for it, can use it. Unless your going to use it again within 30-60 sec.' You'v got the entire rack all around your bench and you can only use 1 set at a time'. Him- 'When I'm done I'll put them back'. So I looked around and noticed a couple of people looking at the rack and I said loud enough for all to hear ' the db are over here, help yourself to what you need as this lifter is confused as to how to share equipment obviously thinking he owns it. I reached down and grabbed the 30's and a couple of others grabbed a set and he says 'hey, Im using those'. A girl says 'well your not right now and Ill rack em when Im done'.

True! What the hell happened to the gyms? I see newbies focused on cables when free weights would be much better to build and strengthen them.

My best guess is that they feel more safe using cables. Or maybe it's a laziness thing. Benches should be cleared and machines unracked when finished, dumbbells need to be put away. They can just walk away from a cable machine when they are done.

Brother, if some dude wanted to squat 135 and I had on five or six plates, we'd strip it for him.

Nobody get s to banging out reps with 585 unless they go through 135 first
