A new study from Spain finds that drinking non-alcoholic red wine is associated with a greater reduction in blood pressure than drinking regular red wine.

The study, reported on in HeartWire, concludes that it is the polyphenols found in red wine that are the likely cause of the blood-pressure reduction and that alcohol appears to weaken their antihypertensive effect.

Published online in Circulation Research, the studyincluded 67 men at risk for heart disease. Men who drank the regular red wine saw a slight decrease in blood pressure, while the men who drank the de-alcoholized red wine saw their BP go down enough to lower their risk of heart disease by 14% and stroke by as much as 20%.

More than just grape juice, de-alcoholized wine is made using the same process and the same ingredients as regular wine. The alcohol is removed after the process is complete to allow for more of the taste and flavor of the wine.

If you are worried that you just lost one of your best arguments for the occasional bacchanalia, there are still many studies pointing to the heart-healthy benefits of good old fashioned alcoholic red wine. The alcohol and antioxidants are believed to help prevent heart disease by increasing levels of "good" cholesterol and protecting against artery damage.

So, however you choose to imbibe, the fruit of the vine (in moderation) can make one happy and healthy. The jury is still out as to whether it makes you wealthy and wise.
